Differentiation strategies are attractive whenever buyers’ needs and preferences are too diverse to be fully satisfied by a standardized product or service. The essence of a broad differentiation strategy is to offer unique product or service attributes that a wide range of buyers find appealing and worth paying for. A company attempting to succeed through differentiation must study buyers’ needs and behavior carefully to learn what buyers think has value and what they are willing to pay for. Then the company must include these desirable features to clearly set itself apart from rivals lacking such product or service attributes. Successful differentiation allows a firm to - Command a premium price. Increase unit sales (because additional buyers are won over by the differentiating features). And gain buyer loyalty to its brand (because some buyers are strongly attracted to the differentiating features and bond with the company and its products). Differentiation opportunities can exist in activities all along an industry’s value chain and particularly in activities and factors that meaningfully impact customer value. Such activities are referred to as uniqueness drivers have a high impact on differentiation rather than on a company’s overall cost position. A low-cost provider strategy can always defeat a differentiation strategy when buyers are satisfied with a basic product and don’t think “extra” attributes are worth a higher price.

Brand and Positioning: Marketing is positioning. Marketing is not branding. Building a brand is a strategy. As an example, Apple has done everything right, from a brand point of view. The best way to build a strong business is to start with a great product or service. That makes the marketer's job easy. You can build a great brand from a great product or service. You cannot build a great brand from a product that is not fundamentally different and better than its competition. Marketing is positioning, positioning something to somebody. Marketing is not branding. Branding is not an objective. Building a brand has never been an objective, it's a strategy. I hate the thought that people would use the word brand as a verb, as in "I can brand something." You simply cannot do that. I much more like the practical definition of positioning. Sales people position products to people every day. Business is marketing. Marketing is positioning. If you really understand how to do positioning, you understand how to drive your business. So a position is that one idea, one simple idea that will make you famous. That's all it is. You've got to decide what's the idea that you will ride to make you and your business famous. That idea has to be different from other people's ideas. It has to be different in a way that creates some business advantage for you. And it has to be different in a way that your audience, whoever they are, finds compelling. Apple has done everything right, from a brand point of view. They didn't have the best business model in the early days and that almost put them out of business. But if you look at them as a marketer, and you believe that the best marketers are different in ways that we find compelling, they stand out as a beacon of difference that their customer finds compelling. Difference is the holy grail in marketing; in positioning, and therefore in marketing. If you can't be different in some way, you cannot stand out. And the marketplace is simply too cluttered to help along people who can't stand out. You have to be willing to be different, to be unique, to stand out. The onus is on you to figure out what makes you different. Then you've got to figure out, from those things that make you different, which of those gives you advantage over your competition. Then, and only then, do you go and talk to your audience and say, what do you find compelling about this? In other words, at the end of the day, you've got an idea that defines you as different, in a way that makes you better, and in a way in which your audience finds compelling. The concept of brand positioning was introduced to the marketing and advertising world in the 70s and 80s by Al Ries and Jack Trout in a series of Ad Age articles and a subsequent book titled Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind. (If you haven't read it, Positioning is definitely recommended reading for anyone in the branding world.) Today's episode features Laura Ries. Laura is Al Ries's daughter, and has been his business partner for 25 years at their consulting firm, Ries & Ries, where they advise clients such as Disney, Ford, Frito-Lay, Papa John's, Samsung, and Unilever. Laura is a bestselling author in her own right. She's co-authored five books with Al, including The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding, and she's also written her own books: Visual Hammer and Battlecry. We discuss both during the episode. Laura and I start with her definition of brand positioning (it's about "owning an idea in the mind"), and the introduction of an illustrative example we come back to again and again during the conversation: Red Bull. Laura says Red Bull "owns the energy drink category because it is the leader," while Monster Energy Drink positioned itself as the opposite of Red Bull by launching with a much larger can. 5-hour Energy, on the other hand, created their own, related category by positioning as an "energy shot." Throughout the course of the conversation, Laura presented her six principles of positioning: Find an open hole. "If somebody owns a position, you're not going to take it away from them. You have to look for another open hole that you can take advantage of...by being the opposite of the leader." Narrow the focus. "Too often, brands and companies, they want to be everything to everybody." The name is so important and significant. "Not just the brand name but the category name." Visual hammer. "Not just a pretty logo or a person-the product itself can be the visual [hammer]. It's something that communicates an idea about the brand." Verbal battlecry. "Not just a slogan, although it might be a slogan or tagline, but it's really the battlecry that'll be used both internally and externally to really understand the brand." PR, not advertising, is what builds brands. "New brands and new categories have more news value to them. That's where new brands need to leverage that opportunity for PR." Nirmalya Kumar has taught at Harvard Business School, IMD-International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland, and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He is currently a Professor of Marketing and Co-Director of Aditya Birla India Centre at London Business School. Kumar has served as a consultant to over 50 Fortune 500 Companies, worked on the board of five Indian firms, and has published six books -- including, most recently, India Inside: The emerging innovation challenge to the West. In 2011, Thinkers50 named him number 26 of the “50 most influential management gurus.” Dr. Nirmalya Kumar is Member – Group Executive Council at Tata Sons. He reports directly to the Chairman of the $100 billion plus Tata group and is responsible for group strategy. Previously, he was professor of marketing at the London Business School and also taught at Columbia Business School, Harvard Business School, IMD (Switzerland) and Northwestern University (Kellogg School of Management). In 2015, a private equity firm based in London and New York sought to bring three distinct brands (Precyse, MedAssets, and Equation) into alignment and delineate a clear path for growth within the crowded and competitive healthcare marketplace. Brandigo/US President Matt Bowen of Newburyport, MA and his team were hired to carve out a place for a new brand, and its acquired companies. Using their brand strategy expertise — which included ample market perception and competitive research — to guide the way, Brandigo worked with the newly combined Executive Leadership Team to create a vision and mission for the company that would energize individuals from each of the three separate cultures and make them excited to be a part of this new company that aimed to transform healthcare. This vision got to the core of what the company stood for, its Brand Purpose, while evoking emotion and energy, to bring the detached internal teams together. From there, Brandigo created a unique brand positioning and brand story that spoke straight to the heart of the company. Finally, Brandigo developed a new corporate brand name (nThrive) and brand architecture, including a distinct color palate and logo in order to solidify a unique space for the brand to “own” within the market. At completion, three different companies, with their own separate cultures, values, and creative significance, were brought together into one unified image. The resulting brand identity is unique and memorable, while clearly supporting the company’s broad array of solutions.
