She set a fashion for very simple dressing but she lived surrounded by antiques. The founder of the House of Chanel really presents a lot of contradictions. Coco Chanel came from very humble beginnings but she became one of the most famous women of the 20th century. Even her career had two distinct periods. The first part lasted from around 1909 to 1939, when she closed her couture house because of World War II. The second half of the Chanel career was from 1953 to 1970 when she came out of kind of a self-imposed retirement. Coco Chanel was born in France in 1883 and she was raised in an orphanage, even though she wasn't really an orphan. Her mother had died and her father just couldn't take care of her and her two sisters, so he dropped them off at an orphanage to be raised. As a young adult she was a seamstress in a local shop and also tried to start a career singing in cafes. It's probably there that she acquired her nickname Coco, her real name was Gabrielle, because a couple of the songs she sang had "Coco" in the title. So here singing name, as it were, was Coco Chanel. She was rescued from this kind of unsuccessful singing career by a rich man that she met at the cafe named Etienne Balsan. Balsan was the heir to an industrial fortune, which gave him the time to ride and train and raise racehorses. He was really influential on Chanel, not only in her style of life, but also in her style of dressing, because Etienne and his wealthy riding friends all walked around in English-style riding clothes, and that's the look that she started to acquire. Coco became an excellent horsewoman and was known throughout her life as a very sporty individual. She not only started to wear English-inflected and menswear styled clothes, she actually could do the sports and the outdoor activities that they represented. Chanel actually started her fashion career as a milliner with a small hat shop she opened in Balsan's apartment in Paris. Chanel's hats were very simple, distinguishing her and her designs from a lot of the other fashionable hats at the time. Her shapes were simple, whereas other designers put a lot of ruffles and feathers and flowers on the hats, Chanel put like one or two ornaments, really keeping it simple in line with her design philosophy. Her first actual clothing shop was opened in Deauville, a resort area, in 1913. Because it was a resort area, people were into less formal, sporty clothes, and so her easy-to-wear skirts and pullovers, her knit tops, found a really receptive audience. She became a proper couturier in 1915, when she opened a real couture house, a made-to-order house in another resort area in Varetz. When she moved her couture operations to Paris, her career really took off, and she found clients among the avant-garde, artistic, more modern, forward-thinking women in the social world. During the 1920s and the 1930s, Chanel's style really crystallized. She became known for using a lot jersey in daywear, really easy-to-wear knits. Simple shapes, a lot of black. While some people say that Chanel invented the black dress, that's of course not true, but she definitely helped popularize the style. She did not operate her business from 1939 to 1953. And in fact, her activities during that period remain a bit controversial. When she ended her self-imposed retirement in the '50s and showed her first collection, people were astonished that it was so similar to the work that she had been doing before. They were really looking for something a little bit more revolutionary from this revolutionary designer. But within a year or two, people had realized that this is the Chanel look, and it in fact became very influential on fashion in general.

Coco Chanel, the woman who changed fashion. The art of savoir-faire.

04:01
Fashion designer Coco Chanel has been credited with developing the "modern woman." Her designs were a symbol of the independent woman she was. Her most significant contributions to the world of fashion were: The Little Black Dress: Chanel wanted to create an effortlessly wearable frock that all women could look stylish in. The little black dress has, for the most part, maintained its popularity through the decades since Chanel brought it into our lives in 1926. The Chanel Suit: She was the first to create women’s suits, using knit material so that they would be lightweight, flexible, and flattering. Suits with impeccable fit, collarless necklines, gold braids, metallic buttons, fitted sleeves, and polished silhouette. Costume jewelry: The designer, who was rarely seen without a heaping pile of pearls around her neck, designed costume jewelry made from chains, beads, and glass that was meant to be worn with her casual daytime sportswear. If women could buy jewelry that was more affordable than real gemstones, they could properly accessorize every outfit they had. Synopsis Fashion designer Coco Chanel, born August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France, is famous for her timeless designs, trademark suits, and little black dresses. Chanel was raised in an orphanage and taught to sew. She had a brief career as a singer before opening her first clothes shop in 1910. In the 1920s, she launched her first perfume and introduced the Chanel suit and the little black dress. Early Life Famed fashion designer Coco Chanel was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France. With her trademark suits and little black dresses, Coco Chanel created timeless designs that are still popular today. She herself became a much revered style icon known for her simple yet sophisticated outfits paired with great accessories, such as several strands of pearls. As Chanel once said,“luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.” Her early years, however, were anything but glamorous. After her mother’s death, Chanel was put in an orphanage by her father who worked as a peddler. She was raised by nuns who taught her how to sew—a skill that would lead to her life’s work. Her nickname came from another occupation entirely. During her brief career as a singer, Chanel performed in clubs in Vichy and Moulins where she was called “Coco.” Some say that the name comes from one of the songs she used to sing, and Chanel herself said that it was a “shortened version of cocotte, the French word for ‘kept woman,” according to an article in The Atlantic.

Intimate Photos of Three Weeks in the Life of French Designer Coco Chanel in 1962

03:38
Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883-1971) is a fashion icon unlike any other. She invented modern clothing for women: At the height of the Belle Époque, she stripped women of their corsets and feathers, bobbed their hair, put them in bathing suits, and sent them out to get tanned in the sun. She introduced slacks, costume jewelry, and the exquisitely comfortable suit. She made the first couture parfum, Chanel No. 5, which remains the most popular scent ever created. In 1962, at the age of 27, Douglas Kirkland received an assignment from LOOK Magazine to photograph Coco Chanel for a story on the legendary fashion icon. For a period of three weeks, Kirkland shadowed Mademoiselle Chanel capturing her intense schedule and daily routine with models, fitters, clients and friends. In order to gain her trust and approval, Chanel instructed Kirkland to initially photograph models wearing her collection and submit the prints for her review. Chanel was so taken with the young man and his photographic skill; she allowed him access to her private rooms, surveying her everyday movements.

Karl Lagerfeld - fashion designer and icon | DW Documentary

42:26
Karl Lagerfeld - the name stands for much more than just fashion. What makes the fashion icon so successful? Who’s the man behind the sunglasses? Designer, artist, fashion icon, also known as "Kaiser Karl." No living fashion designer, let alone a German one, is as celebrated as Karl Lagerfeld. On September 10, the man with the trademark ponytail and sunglasses will celebrate his 85th birthday - it’s believed. From dawn to late morning, Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel, Fendi and his own signature brand - a combined workload of up to 15 collections a year. A workhorse who never takes breaks or even a vacation, he is also a photographer and filmmaker. His passion for fashion was awakened by a Dior show in Hamburg in 1950. Four years later, at the age of 17, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld recounts his beginnings in the industry, as well as his upper class background and childhood in Schleswig-Holstein. Karl Lagerfeld was greatly influenced by his mother, whom he describes as his personal style icon. Karl Lagerfeld's caustic comments are notorious and dreaded by those at the receiving end. As an artist, Karl Lagerfeld works in several media, from pictures and photographs to book illustrations and videos. The documentary follows Karl Lagerfeld to exhibition openings, during the hectic preparations for his fashion shows, and at photo shoots in Paris as it seeks to uncover the man behind the mask. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. 15 MOST Luxurious Fashion Brands

11:15
From Oscar de la Renta to Chanel, here are some of the most lavish and prestigious fashion brands. Subscribe to Hindered Thoughts http://goo.gl/d3U3RP 6. Chanel The high fashion wear company was introduced to the world back in 1909 by none other than Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, otherwise known as “Coco Chanel.” This is where the brand gets its inspiration for the famously recognizable logo that is two interlocking C’s. The company specializes in creating haute couture for its wealthy clients but also for fashion models like Naomi Campbell, who once modeled for them, and actresses Marilyn Monroe, Keira Knightley, and Nicole Kidman. One of their most famous products is the perfume No. 5 de Chanel, along with the Chanel Suit. Today, Chanel is valued at being $6.8 billion dollars. An interesting fact to note is that Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director behind Fendi, happens to be the creative director for Chanel as well. 5. Prada Founded back in 1913 by Mario Prada, this fashion brand actually started out by manufacturing leather bags and trunks. It would then evolve into selling everything from clothing to perfume and even a brief stint of LG Prada cell phones. Though the brand may have broadened its inventory, it still spends the majority of its focus creating some of the world’s most exclusive handbags that only the rich and famous can possibly hope to afford. Mario Prada believed that women should not be involved in business so he excluded his own family members from getting involved. In a fantastic twist of irony, his son did not care to run the business so his daughter Luisa Prada took over as his successor and is now currently being run by her daughter Miuccia. 4. House of Versace The fashion empire that is the House of Versace all started with fashion designer Gianni Versace back in 1978. He created a brand that has been synonymous with elegance and simply oozes high fashion. His glamorous gowns have gone on to make a name for himself as a respected designer. Like the case of the famous black dress held with gold safety pins that actress Elizabeth Hurley wore back in 1994 to the premiere of Four Weddings and A Funeral. Sadly, Versace’s life was cut short in 1997 on the steps of his Miami mansion when he became the fifth and final victim of Andrew Cunanan. The tragic event will be the story behind American Crime Story’s season 2 titled: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. After his death, his sister Donatella became the new Artistic Director and has established a $5.5 billion company her brother would be proud of. 3. Gucci Started in 1921 by a Mr. Guccio Gucci, the company was originally dabbing in leather goods. It wasn’t until 19 years later when his son Aldo would take the company from being a one-stop shop into the fashion powerhouse that it’s now known for being. It’s Aldo that would usher in the era of the brand’s iconic “Bamboo Bag” and its “ready to wear segments.” In the 90’s, the company decided to bring American Fashion designer Tom Ford to revamp their women’s wear. He ended up helping launch the brand to where it is today. The fashion brand houses other well-known designers in its collections such as Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, and Yves Saint Laurent. If you’re in the market to do some shopping at this $12.4 billion brand, expect to spend at least $2,000. 2. Louis Vuitton This may come as a shock but the famous fashion brand has been around longer than you might have thought. Formed 163 years ago in 1854, a young man by the name of Louis Vuitton started out as an apprentice for a box-maker. Vuitton ended up becoming a well-known crafter of luxury trunks and opened up his own shop in Paris. He then ended up becoming the personal box-maker of Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugenie de Montijo. Fast forward years later and the company is now worth $28.1 billion with a generated revenue of $10.1 billion. Today, Louis Vuitton doesn’t make just trunks but designer handbags and clothing that can be spotted on the most famous of A-listers. 1. Balenciaga The beginning of Balenciaga’s reign began back in 1919 when it was established by its founder of the same name, Cristóbal Balenciaga. As a young child, Balenciaga became an apprentice to a tailor in his hometown of Getaria, Spain and would eventually get his formal training in Madrid. He would go on to create the House of Balenciaga and skyrocketed to success thanks to his artistic genius. He was hailed as the undisputed “ King of Fashion” and was highly respected among his peers which included the likes of Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Pierre Balmain. Balenciaga even helped train the likes of high-fashion designers Oscar de la Renta and Hubert Givenchy to name a few.

Karl Lagerfeld | Fashion Designers

Watch more Fashion Designers and Fashion Brands videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/500162-Karl-Lagerfeld-Fashion-Designers It's hard to imagine, but by the early 80s, the Chanel brand was not very desirable. The House of Chanel brought in Karl Lagerfeld to revitalize and renovate the brand in 1983. Lagerfeld did a great job in bringing Chanel up to speed, making the brand more appealing for the 1980s customer. He worked with existing traditions. He went through the repertoire of what was Chanel . . . what was Chanel all about? For example, Lagerfeld took the double-C logo of Chanel and used it brazenly on the outside of the clothes. He combined very modern shapes, shorter skirts, black leather jackets with existing Chanel pieces, like striped sailor jersey's that Coco Chanel was often photographed herself wearing. He did an excellent job in appealing to the 1980s customer who wanted to wear the labels on the outside, rather than on the inside. The clothes that he created for Chanel and continues to create, continue the tradition of Chanel. They're modern, they're wearable, but they're also relevant to today's customer for luxury brands.

EnglishListeningTape - Iconic Designer Coco Chanel Still Inspire

04:46
http://Speak-FluentEnglish.blogspot.com/ Gabrielle was Chanel's given name. "She was born illegitimate," "Her father was never really around. He wasn't very responsible." fashion writer Justine Picardie wrote "Coco Chanel: The Legend and The Life" the latest book on the designer. Although Chanel's father was absent, he had a profound influence on her. "Her father was an itinerant market trader always on the move," Picardie says. "He sold buttons and ribbons, some of the elements which you then see in Chanel's designs." When she was 11 Chanel's mother died and her father put her in an orphanage, there she learned to sew. "She also discovered the elements of what was to make her a great designer, that mix of darkness and light, white and black." she explains. "The pearls, which is so much a part of Chanel's style, which seem very much reminiscent of the rosary beads the nun wore, the chains around the nun's waist. There are still tiny chains sewn in the bottom of every Chanel jacket." Chanel left the orphanage, and worked as a cabaret singer. With money from a lover, she started a hat making business in Paris. Picardie says her clients loved the clothes Chanel wore and wanted the same things. "At that time women were still wearing corsets," she says. "They were wearing dresses they couldn't breathe in, let alone walk in, run in, you know, work in. Chanel stripped away corsets, also sort of unnecessary adornments- that huge feathery flower trimmed hats and the very, very bright, almost clashing colors." Chanel introduced the 20th century's iconic design: the little black dress. Drawing on interviews with surviving acquaintances, relatives and employees, as well as Karl Lagerfeld, current creative director of Chanel, Picardie says she was able to come close to the real person. Coco Chanel designed her own logo. "She was a mass of contradictions, at times was very unhappy and very lonely," she says. "There were other periods of great joy and a sense of huge achievement in her life. But I think that the abandonment that started with her father was to repeat itself. And, at the end of her life, although she had a couple of very close friends, she neverthless died feeling very alone." Picardie makes light of Chanel's World War II collaboration with the German occupiers of Paris. "She became involved with a German during the occupation of Paris," Picardie says. "He was a double agent working for the British as well as the Germans." ... But according to Suzy Menkes, fashion editor of the International Herald Tribune, none of this is new information. "There were persons who were wonderful and helped. There were others who collaborated and it's certain that Coco Chanel herself was a collaborator," she says. "But you know the company itself has been, for the last 40 years, run by a Jewish family. I don't think people take that against the company." But it was held against Chanel when she returned to Paris in 1954 - from self imposed exile - says Picardie. "The French fashion press gave her terrible reviews, probably to punish her for her relationship with this German during the second world war," Picardie says. "It was a very brilliant collection; these tweed jackets, the jersey jackets and soft suits." In the 1950s and 60s, Chanel was at the top of her game. "She started dressing everybody from Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe," she says. "Chanel also dressed Jackie Kennedy." Menkes adds, "Chanel's secret is that clarity, that modernity, it's just the signage of the word 'C', and somehow to me it looks very forward thinking, very modern, very dynamic. Certainly the brand was very well managed since she herself passed away. Karl Lagerfeld has certainly rejuvenated Chanel and continues to do so." Menkes says that's why Chanel is still an iconic brand. The designer lives on as inspiration itself.

How a Dior Dress is Made | Visionaire | Refinery29

04:28
Subscribe to the Refinery29 channel: http://bit.ly/subscribe-to-r29 “Couture” is a magic word. It conjures thoughts of impeccable craftsmanship, visionary design, and legendary fashion moments. But, most of us don't encounter haute couture very often, unless we're looking at a celebrity on the red carpet, a model on a catwalk, or a mannequin in a museum case. We wanted to get closer to couture — and to get you closer to couture — so we partnered with the legendary fashion publisher Visionaire to create this video, which tells the story of one dress from birth to runway. It’s a unique look inside the Dior atelier, where the team has been hard at work bringing creative director Raf Simons’ ideas to life. While an individual couture garment can take half a year to produce, here you will see the story of one dress (“Look #53,” in fashion-speak) come together in just a few minutes — from the first muslin pattern to the final style model Kinga Rajzak wore during yesterday’s haute couture show. It’s an incredible revelation, and when you discover what goes into these garments, the crazy prices on couture start to seem at least a little less crazy. While Look #53 is the star of the show, the video gives us the chance to reconnect with the rarely credited artisans and seamstresses we saw in Dior and I, as well as a cameo from Simons himself. Think of this as a mini-trip to Paris or a crash course into fashion’s highest form; either way, enjoy your couture, concentrated.
