POP CULTURE: Why Music Works

05:46
Music may be the finest therapy humanity has ever invented. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): http://bit.ly/2czLAUv FURTHER READING “One of the most calming things that societies have ever devised is the lullaby. In almost every culture there has ever been, mothers have rocked and sung their babies to sleep. A humbling point that a lullaby reveals is that it’s not necessarily the words of a song that make us feel more tranquil. The baby doesn’t understand what’s being said but the sound has its effect all the same. The baby is showing us that we are all tonal creatures long before we are creatures of understanding. As adults, we grasp the significance of words of course, but there remains a sensory level which cuts through and affects far more than an argument or an idea ever could. The musician can, at points, trump anything the philosopher might tell us….” You can read more on this and other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: http://bit.ly/2cmEGSM MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: http://bit.ly/2cvT4pz Watch more films on POP CULTURE in our playlist: http://bit.ly/29Ak0pd Do you speak a different language to English? What is Company Culture? | How to build something that lasts

05:49
What is company culture? Answering this question can be hard, but don't worry! We've answered the culture question for you along with some tips on building culture for your own company. How do we define culture? Ultimately, company culture is about how we treat each other. When you center your culture efforts around people and how they should be treated, everything else falls into place. As you communicate your culture, start by defining these three things: 1. Define Your Mission 2. Define Your Vision 3. Define Your Values How you define and grow your culture should depend people. So go out there and be good to each other. Good luck! TRANSCRIPT: Life is full of questions. Most questions are small. “Oh, what's that smell?” “No no. Where do you want to eat?” “Wait, what did you just say?” However, some questions - “so where's grandpa now?” - are big. “What if what we call ghosts are actually aliens from another dimension?” “So do you love me?” Of all the questions asked in the business world very few are as big as “What is company culture?”. So, what does company culture mean? Well, there are a lot of definitions out there. Some are good. Some are not so good and some are, well, incomplete. It's pretty common for people to associate company culture with things like benefits or perks. “It's so fun beating you guys.” “Some of us are trying to not work here, OK?” “This is company culture.” These things can influence culture for sure and hopefully they have a positive impact. But, it's important to recognize that company culture exists independent of those things. “Now this, is what I call company culture.” In other words you can't just give your employees a bunch of free stuff and hope that those things equal culture there are no shortcuts. “I thought you'd never ask.” There are a lot of good definitions for company culture out there. “Company culture is the set of standards and attitudes that members of an organization have in common.” “Actually it's the shared beliefs and purposes within an organization that's what company culture is.” “No no, you're both close but company culture is the values and behaviors that people in an organization agree on. I didn't give up my semi-annual perm for this.” Those are all fine answers. Whether you call them values or beliefs or whatever, it is helpful to find the common principles you aspire towards. It helps make sense of your culture and your people. But even these definitions ultimately fall short. “What?” These definitions are close but there's something very important that these types of definitions forget. “Just spit it out skinny boy! What is company culture?” Company culture is ultimately about how we treat each other. In fancy marketing language company culture is the summation of how people within an organization interact with each other and work together. Not bad. Okay, really what a company believes or values isn't as important as how they act. Now it's still important to talk about your culture. In fact as you communicate your culture, may I suggest you do that by defining these three things. First, define your mission. In other words, what is your purpose beyond just making money? Second, define your vision. What is it you want to accomplish in the long term? Third, define your values. What are the fundamental beliefs you share on how people should act and be treated? Defining these three things will help you communicate your culture to others. Remember company culture talk is useless unless you walk the walk and no amount of brilliantly worded mission statements or fun perks can make up for a genuine culture where people are treated with respect. He's joking don't. When you center your culture efforts around people and how they should be treated. Everything else falls into place. This is what the best companies do. They know that when you focus on people it's clear what behaviors and values and beliefs and beliefs are truly important. Focusing on people helps you know which perks and benefits are actually worthwhile to offer. You know who to hire since you can look for candidates who already treat people the way you do. And on the flip side you know who to well let go. We can go on and on discussing company culture because there's so much to it but the point is this cultures are made up of people. So how you define it and grow your culture should depend on people. How should your people treat each other to be happy and engaged. How should your people work together to be fulfilled and successful. Answer those questions first however you define your culture. If you make sure your people have the opportunities to grow professionally and personally. Chances are everything will work out. Now go out there and be good to each other. “Mom what's company culture like in heaven?” “You sure you wanna know kid?” “What do you think?” “Never.” “Yeah, figures. You think he knows that he's kissing an alien from the Gremulon galaxy?” “What is wrong with you?!”

Franklin Foer: 100 Years of Politics and Culture in America

01:03:06
To mark a century of The New Republic, editor Franklin Foer will join us for a discussion on the pivotal issues of modern America. Highlighting seminal contributions to the magazine, Foer’s Insurrections of the Mind is an exploration of such topics as America’s role in the world, the rise and fall of communism, the economy, terrorism, and technology, not to mention race, civil rights and the women’s movement. As political discussions increase in the lead up to the midterm elections, these issues remain just as important today as they were throughout the past century. Insurrections of the Mind, an anthology of the magazine's most seminal articles, celebrates a cultural, political and intellectual institution that has stood the test of time. Select contributors include Virginia Woolf, George Orwell, Philip Roth, Michael Lewis, Zadie Smith, William Faulkner, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes, John Updike and Margaret Talbot. Speaker Franklin Foer is the Editor of The New Republic. The discussion will be moderated by William Drummond, Professor, Graduate School of Journalism, University of California, Berkeley. Tommy Chong stops by Cannabis Culture

00:49
Tommy Chong is a regular contributing writer for CC Magazine, and stopped by the office while visiting Vancouver today, March 2nd. Tommy Chong's next article, for the upcoming issue CC #70, is about his prison time in Taft Penitentiary and the sickness that affects so many prisoners in the USA. During Tommy's visit, we showed him our new expanded space above the CC Headquarters -- two floors of store and vapour lounge space -- and he's just as excited about it opening as we are! I want to add a note about the infamous Mr. Chong: he's a lot more lively and talkative BEFORE he gets stoned, and we filmed this at the end of his visit, so you're seeing Tommy in his more laid-back stoner persona -- which is, I suppose, exactly what he's known for! Check out Cannabis Culture Magazine for Tommy Chong's articles and more great marijuana reading!

F.E.D.S. | Inside The Unofficial Newsletter Of Urban Crime Culture

09:18
F.E.D.S. Magazine doesn’t offer subscriptions. It has no website or social media presence. You can’t find it at Barnes & Noble. But if you’ve lived in many of America’s poor, urban areas or been entangled in its penal system, you’re more than likely familiar with the publication. Its reputation for raw, authentic coverage of the criminal fringe has made it a staple in US prisons. F.E.D.S. — an acronym for Finally Every Dimension of the Streets — has been owned and operated by Antoine Clark for 18 years. Antoine doesn’t just run the magazine’s business operations, he writes many of the stories. Recently he took VICE News behind the scenes as he worked on the forthcoming issue — from the thrills of riding alongside the Go Hard Boyz motorcycle club to photographing women for the “Sweets” section. Crime may be the magazine’s main focus, but Antoine believes F.E.D.S. can actually help keep its audience out of the criminal justice system by encouraging reading and literacy — which have been proven to lower incarceration rates. “Some people’s gonna take caution from it, some people’s gonna take glory from it,” Antoine said. Exhibition merges cars with underground art culture

06:45
(29 Oct 2018) LEADIN: A new exhibition in Los Angeles is celebrating the US cult of custom cars. 'Auto-Didactic: The Juxtapoz School' features art, fashion and vehicles that represent the custom culture of the hot rod era that began in Southern California in the 1960s.   STORYLINE: A colourful car exhibition with a difference is turning heads at the world renowned Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. 'Auto-Didactic: The Juxtapoz School' is intersecting cars and underground art. The work of more than 50 artists accompanies the car display to create an eclectic display that examines the works of Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine. The magazine was created in 1994 by a group of artists and collectors, including Robert Williams, C.R. Stecyk, Greg Escalante, and Eric Swenson, to define and celebrate urban alternative and underground contemporary art. This exhibit looks at the impact of the art and culture magazine and the Southern Californian 'Kustom Kulture' phenomenon -  which is adapting cars, hot rods, surfboards, as well as urban and underground art. It includes works, ranging from sculpture and paintings to instruments and illustrations, from key artists such as Von Dutch and Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. C.R. Stecyk is the exhibition co-creator: "This exhibit is a compendium of art, be it sculpture, painting, automotive art, modified automobiles and kind of exhales the inner relationship of art culture and commentary between the two as propelled by motorized mechanized transport." Joseph Harper, co-curator, art historian and Assistant Curator at Petersen Automotive Museum says the museum sees cars beyond their purpose and highlights them. "Juxtapoz Magazine was founded in 1994 and it came out of an exhibit that happened here in Southern California called Kustom Kulture. Kustom Kulture is a movement that goes back to the 1960's where hot-rod culture sort of predominated and figures like Von Dutch or Ed "Big Daddy" Roth really became household names. Out of that exhibition many of the artists and people who organized it later started Juxtapoz magazine and we are now here 25 years after that founding along with the 25th anniversary of the Petersen Automotive Museum. We really wanted to explore where that connection has gone over the last quarter century," says Harper. The exhibition highlights notable custom cars including, a 1932 Ford Roadster named "Prickly Heat" that was restored in 2001. It is owned by Robert Williams, one of the founders of Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine. The car is widely considered the first definitive hot rod. Painted in shocking purple and chartreuse. "The Orbitron" by "Big Daddy" Roth was created in 1964. This fiberglass car has the aesthetic of the 1960s with asymmetrical design and bubble top. It was discovered in 2007 in Juarez, Mexico outside a bookstore. Stecyk says it went through extensive restoration. This 1970 Kenford Truck is by Von Dutch, well known for his creative and abstract designs. The truck which Dutch owned was crated by grafting a 1947 Kenworth cab to a 1956 Ford chassis. It was featured in the first issue of Juxtapoz as part of a feature article on him. The 1959 Cadillac titled "The New and Improved Ultima Suprema Deluxe 2012" by Kenny Scharf is a show stopper. It features pop culture icons, cartoon characters and futuristic scenes. It has creatures floating among space-age cultural symbols and outer worldly found objects, pop culture references and a retro-future timeline.
