Depression, the secret we share | Andrew Solomon

29:22
"The opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality, and it was vitality that seemed to seep away from me in that moment." In a talk equal parts eloquent and devastating, writer Andrew Solomon takes you to the darkest corners of his mind during the years he battled depression. That led him to an eye-opening journey across the world to interview others with depression -- only to discover that, to his surprise, the more he talked, the more people wanted to tell their own stories. 8 Signs You're Suffering from Depression Without Knowing It

11:31
How to understand you're suffering from depression? How to get rid of depression which is a serious health condition that can’t be ignored? Depression is a serious matter that, unfortunately, doesn’t get talked about enough. Simply feeling a little sad can make us think that we're depressed, but that's not always the case…or is it? Let's find out what signs are hinting that you might actually be suffering from “the plague of the 21st century”. How to recognize depression? 0:54 The most common signs of depression are the following: you constantly feel down and tired. Your self-esteem has hit rock bottom. You have concentration and memory problems and troubles sleeping. Your weight changes, it can go either way: you all of a sudden gain several pounds or your weight drops drastically. Nothing, including your favorite food, TV show, video game, or even meeing up with your besties, brings you pleasure. You experience mood swings, and you can suddenly become extremely short-tempered with a lack of basic tolerance. Your health deteriorates. It's really common for depressed people to suddenly start experiencing aches and pains, most frequently in the joints or back. If at least 3 to 4 signs hit home for you, it most likely means that you have some form of depression. Basically, the more signs you’re showing, the more depressed you are. How to make it better? 7:34 The first thing you have to do is go to the doctor. According to psychotherapist Sean Grover, there are steps you can take in three areas of your life to make your mental state better. The first thing to take care of is your body. Start doing 30-minute workouts at least 3 times a week, get at least 7 hours of sleep a night, and add more of your favorite foods to your diet, especially sugary ones. The second and equally important part is your mind. Try to explore the world around you as if you never have before. Finally, your spirit should also get a dose of treatment too. The best thing you can do here is meditation. Through it, you can learn to understand and listen to yourself on a deeper level. Try to explore the world around you as if you never have before. Your spirit should also get a dose of treatment too with meditation. -“Seasonal depression” can be treated with natural substances. Experts also recommend to start seeing a doctor earlier and doing it regularly. Do you have any methods of your own on how to fight depression? Tell us in the comments below! 10 Habits of People With Concealed Depression

02:20
Lose up to 24 pounds in 6 weeks (free guide): https://www.focusfitness.net/ffyt-fat-crusher-plan This video will show you habits of people with concealed depression 1. Searching for a purpose People suffering from hidden depression are much more susceptible to feeling things like inadequacy and anxiety which leaves them searching for something they can never seem to achieve in their own minds 2. Strange eating habits People with depression may not be able to eat much or at all when they are at their worst. That being said some of them may eat more when at their worst 3. Abnormal sleeping habits People with depression will often sleep for what seems like or may literally be days. Sleep at times can be impossible while other times could be the only thing left that the person can do 4. Use substances to feel better Someone who is dealing with depression usually knows what it is they can take to ease their pain in a sense. They know that caffeine and sugar will raise their mood and that some medicines can help them 5. They have abandonment issues Abandonment causes people with depression to be more and more secretive about their feelings and creates a fear within them of being abandoned by their loved ones 6. Make efforts to seem happy People suffering from depression learn to fake moods. They will often come off as happy and normal on the outside. When they let their inner struggles appear on the outside they feel as if they are bringing others down 7. They can’t shut their brains These people process everything going on in their lives at a fast speed. They over analyze the good and the bad making everything impact them much deeper 8. They have great ‘cover up’ stories These people process everything going on in their lives at a fast speed. They over analyze the good and the bad making everything impact them much deeper 9. Make muted cries for help Sometimes we all need help. However, if you notice their cries and can help them in any way, you are creating a very close and trust filled bond with them 10. Always think worst-case-scenarios This can be beneficial from time to time. However, looking at things from this perspective all the time can be stressful and more depressing Hidden depression signs Depression symptoms

5 Hidden Signs of Depression

04:39
Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. The signs of depression can include depressed mood most of the day, significant weight loss, fatigue or low energy, inability to think or concentrate, thoughts of suicide, etc. Hidden depression or concealed depression can be very hard to spot, because the most successful and functioning people can be oblivious to what's going on with themselves. In this video, we bring to light some hidden signs of depression. However, be sure to consult a professional when getting properly diagnosed. References: Grohol, J. Don't suffer from your depression in silence | Nikki Webber Allen

Depression or a secret we do not share even with the best friend

03:42

The hidden blessings of depression

20:49
Depression afflicts many of us at some stage in our life. John is no exception. In this video he reflects on his own experience of depression and whether, in fact, depression can be our teacher. Being half-Russian also gives John a deeper insight into the nature of depression - not only at a personal level but maybe as part of a national psyche. He tells us how he unexpectedly started a degree in Russian Studies at Nottingham University aged 51 and, after graduation, spent 5 1/2 years in Russia - "One of the most fulfilling and interesting times of my life". As he explains, "Accustomed to being half-different, Russia showed me a world where the 'difference' belonged. It made me completely happy". Note: we have used a new format for this recording without the interviewer so your comments are welcome. The Second Silent Meditation Retreat on 30/31 October 2018 has only one place left - you will find the booking application here - http://spiritualunfoldment.co.uk/retreats.html. The Broken Window - Surviving Depression | Judy Kucharuk | TEDxGrandePrairie

13:29
They say that membership has its privileges. Okay… as a member of the (not) exclusive club of Canadians suffering from depression, Judy has the privilege of sharing her experience wrestling with the chainmail that occasionally encapsulates her being, making movement towards any shred of sunlight virtually impossible. Unashamed and not willing to hide behind a mask of “I’m okay…really I am”, Kucharuk will discuss her lifetime struggle with a brain that from time to time, feels the need to pull the shades down and retreat into a corner. “Think before you speak Judy, look before you leap Judy”: Constant reminders given to Judy (Stanley) Kucharuk by her peers as she was growing up. Thankfully, this rebellious small town girl simply could not comply and rushed headlong into life, unable to edit the words that bubbled to the surface. Those oftentimes inappropriate thoughts and words became a conduit for her to share her lifelong struggle with depression. Judy now lives in Dawson Creek, British Columbia and when she isn’t working full time as a Special Events Manager at the Encana Events Centre, she writes a column for the Alaska Highway News or records her column “Peace of Mind” for CBC Radio. Recently Kucharuk published her first book titled, “Naked Tuesday” – a self deprecating collection of real-life essays which follows the author as she gets older….but never quite grows up. The book is an intimate, relatable look at her life as a daughter, wife and mother, and how she uses humour to share her life experiences. Your brain hallucinates your conscious reality | Anil Seth

17:01
Right now, billions of neurons in your brain are working together to generate a conscious experience -- and not just any conscious experience, your experience of the world around you and of yourself within it. How does this happen? According to neuroscientist Anil Seth, we're all hallucinating all the time; when we agree about our hallucinations, we call it "reality." Join Seth for a delightfully disorienting talk that may leave you questioning the very nature of your existence. Why are Anxiety and Depression Connected?

09:05
PRE-ORDER MY BOOK NOW! http://bit.ly/2s0mULy By simply watching my diagnosis videos about depression and anxiety you could easily think that they are very different. A depressed person doesn’t like doing anything they used to, feels hopeless and sad, and has changes in their diet and sleep patterns. A person with anxiety on the other hand can feel like they are living in a state of extreme agitation, being on edge most of the day and worrying about anything and everything happening in their life. These 2 mental illnesses seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum, not related to one another at all. However, statistically speaking the most common form of depression is what we call agitated depression. Many people also share how they will be tired all day, feeling low and completely unmotivated, but then at night they can’t sleep because their mind keeps humming with worry about what they did or didn’t do that day. I even had a patient who struggled to stop her mind from running through each and every conversation she had had that day and how she could have been better, more understanding or less awkward. Now it’s not only the agitated depression that connects anxiety and depression, research shows that this link has more to do with how those with depression and anxiety manage stress. Whenever we are bombarded with stress in our life those with anxiety and depression tend to deal with it through avoidance. Meaning when stress comes our way and we are pushed into our fight-flight-or freeze response, we choose flight. So you can see that with anxiety your obsessions about failure are fear-laden, whereas with depression your ruminations reflect intense discouragement, to the point of hopelessness or despair. But in both cases you're feeling overwhelmed because of a lack of self-confidence. And that's the real issue behind feeling overwhelmed, which in turn leads us to either anxiety, depression--or a veritable combination of these two painful emotions. Furthermore, much of the symptoms of depression and anxiety really do overlap. Here are just some of the symptoms you will see in both diagnosis: sleep disturbance, tearfulness, worry, loss of appetite, loss of sex drive, lack of motivation, body aches, and difficulty concentrating just to name a few. So it is easy to see why many of us find ourselves toggling back from forth from depression to anxiety and often experience both at the same time! Or possibly being diagnosed with one when we really only have the other! But like anything I talk about, I always like to end with what we can do to better manage the symptoms! So let’s get into that! 1. Positive self-talk 2. Talk therapy 3. Medication 4. Resourcing! Depression and mental illness can feel like they are weighing down on the quality of life. For Giving Week 2018, Psych2Go wants to share a compilation of what people with depression what you to understand, because it's easy to make assumptions about a depressed person. Depression isn't as easy as "just" being healthier or exercising more, and it's not easy to understand why one might feel depressed. It's not that we're not trying hard enough when we are depressed; we can't snap out of it that easily. We feel like a burden when we are depressed, and don't want to annoy or bother others. We truly appreciate your efforts, but don't want you to try and "fix" us, either. Do you empathize with any of these feelings? Please remember - the Psych2Go family is always here for you, if you need someone to reach out to. Our comment section is always a very friendly and inclusive safe circle! Psych2Go is delighted to be a part of Giving Week 2018, specifically the Brain & Behavior Foundation! Please do not feel pressured to make monetary donations, as even just liking the video and sharing it to others will be great! 100% of every dollar donated for research is invested in their research grants, which funds the most innovative ideas in neuroscience and psychiatry to better understand the causes and develop new ways to treat brain and behavior disorders. Depression in Filmmakers - Let's Talk

05:06
Did you know our videos are possible because of Patreon supporters! https://www.patreon.com/52things Join the community so we can make science communication and teach others to do the same! Over the last 5 years, I’ve had two 6-month periods where I was very down - I was depressed. I never went to see a doctor, so I wasn't diagnosed, but I realize that this action of not taking action was part of a bigger problem we all have in this filmmaking world. The more I started to tell people the more I realized it was everyone's secret. I was tired, unmotivated, stressed, anxious, couldn’t sleep, and feeling worthless. I couldn’t get it to leave. Was it related to being a filmmaker and YouTuber in this modern world? I think so. I’d be willing to say that depression is higher in our field and I think we need to talk about it. Here are my favorite videos that I’ve seen on the topic of depression all wrapped up into a nice little playlist. If you have others feel free to add them in the links below. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrOHQlsT16OsB1jFqU52703xZa33wc2kG Also, do leave me your comments. Look, it’s important to let anyone that is going through it know they’re not alone. And, realize that it doesn’t mean you’re weak if you’re going through depression - anymore than having a broken leg means your weak. I might even see it as part of the struggle that anyone in our field will likely go through to get to where they want to be. Thanks for watching and letting me share. --- For those of you who like more of these filmmaker reality things, I made a playlist of a dozen or so videos we have made on similar tough topics for filmmakers: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrOHQlsT16Ot3X_iTPxEt2xEC5scigkWT ------------ Want to take better video?
