Workout Advice for Older Men (STARTING AT AGE 15!!)

Does something change so dramatically that would force you to have to pick up the “old person” workout instead of the ones being done by somebody half your age? Well, if you allow your mind to believe that and you’ve allowed your body to follow then maybe. That said, I hope by the end of this video you will have a much different opinion on the right workout for men regardless of age. To illustrate the errors in this thinking just remember back to when you were a child. Do you remember how you used to be able to bend over and touch your toes with nearly perfect hamstring flexibility. How about being able to squat all the way down to the ground and back up without the slightest joint discomfort or mobility issues. The problem is, that as we age we stop doing the things that kept us feeling young. It’s a case of “use it or lose it”. If you don’t continue to do the workouts and exercises and simple daily activities that tested your physicality, you will lose much of the attributes you gained from doing these things. I used to have to jump a fence to get from one class to the other at college. If I didn’t, I would have to walk all the way around the campus and it would have made it much more difficult to get to my next class on time. During a single semester spent off site at an internship I took a hiatus from fence jumping! The first time I jumped after coming back months later, I felt as if my ankles would give out and that knees and hips felt a ground reaction shock I hadn’t felt in a long time. I didn’t use it, so I lost it. The same thing happens with your workouts and training as you age. If you stop doing things in your workouts because you allow yourself to get too tight or you sacrifice your mobility, then you are only making it harder on yourself to regain those attributes the older you get. In order to feel young and fit forever you have to not only make sure you are continuing to do the things that make you strong now but that represent every facet of well being. A complete approach must include balance, mobility, agility, strength, flexibility, and even mental toughness and a resilience to aging! Don’t simply accept that you are getting old because a number tells you that you are. If you stay active and fit you will continue to be strong, ripped and muscular despite what you have been told you should look like “for a man your age”! 6 Exercises Men Over 40 Need To Start Doing Correctly

If You're A Man Over 40, You Need To See This: http://go.sixpackshortcuts.com/never13bc ---------------- Hi, guys. Mark Mcilyar - #1-Subscribed Senior Trainer here with Abs After 40. Today we're going to go through a specific back workout I do with my coaching clients to get in shape to help lose weight and get the body they truly deserve. Let's get started: 0:49 - Cable Pulldowns: Make sure the seat stabilizer isn't too loose so the machine isn't pulling you out of the seat. This will work your lats, traps, and rhomboids. Control the weight and the tempo as you go through the movement, focusing hard on contracting the back and not yanking the weight. 1:42 - Bent Over Barbell Rows: Form is critical - if not done correctly you could hurt yourself. Keeping a straight back, pull and drive with your elbows backward with the bar. Like I said, try to hold the weight at the top of the move to help control your form and the muscle contraction. 2:35 - Bent Over Cable Pulldowns: Keep your core engaged and tight throughout the workout. Let your arms go all the way up above your head, then pull downward until the rope touches your thighs. In case there isn't a rope, just a straight bar attachment instead. 2:35 - Deadlifts: I recommend using a weight belt to support and keep your lower back from arching to keep you from injuring yourself. This is a great compound movement - using multiple big muscle groups simultaneously. Keep the bar as close to your body, going all the way up and all the way back down. 4:12 - Shrugs: You are trying to isolate and focus on building the traps here, so no using your legs or other body parts to complete the move. If you're struggling with the weight, move down in weight to focus on using the correct form. Do as I did, holding the rep at the top for 1-2 seconds then go back down. 4:49 - One Arm Rows: This is another great compound muscle movement. Don't yank, but pull the weight up and rearward, driving with your elbows up and slightly backward. The goal is to slowly pull up and lower the weight. There you have it, guys, a complete back workout in about full of compound and isolation movements. My goal here today is to make sure you understand that form and technique are critical in not only executing the workouts properly but to keep you from injuring yourself while doing so. At the end of the day, it isn't how many reps you are doing, but the number of good reps that is most important. What other kinds of workouts are you interested in learned with us? Competing as a college athlete as well as being a former US Marine, fitness has always been an important part of my life. Now, since reaching middle age, I can say that I’m in the best shape ever, even at the age of 60. Today, we’re going to go through my favorite upper-body cable routine. When executing these workouts, make sure to choose a weight setting you are confident in executing 10-12 repetitions with - no need to go heavy on this workout since we’ll be focusing on control and muscle contraction. Make sure to have your first set be a warm up, that way you can better figure out the weight you want to use and let your muscles get warm for the movement. Let’s get started: 0:51 - Cable Crossover; High to Low - Attach the stirrup handles to the pulleys and position both pulleys to the very top of the station. Get to the start position by standing centered between each pulley, grabbing both handles at the top and take 2 steps forward. Your feet should be positioned almost in a lunge with the front knee bent, back straight and arms bent slightly at the elbow across your body with palms facing one another. Begin the movement by letting the weights descend on the stack and your elbows travel back, keeping arms slightly bent. Once your elbows reach past your torso, return your arms back to the start position. Make sure to keep constant tension on your chest and front deltoids throughout the whole set. 2:36 - Cable Chest Press - Now position the pulleys lower on the cable station, just below shoulder level. The start position is similar to that of the first cable crossover, only this time with palms facing the floor and hands together. Imagine hugging a wide tree trunk with your arms, keeping them bent slightly at the elbow and in the same position throughout the movement. Let the elbows begin to travel back and the weights return to the stack. Once the elbows reach behind the torso, return your arms to the start position. 3:55 - Bent Over Cable Crossover - Return the pulleys to the very top position on the machine. Similar to our first cable crossover exercise, grab the handles and take a step forward. Your arms should be slightly bent and in front of your body, with fists together at the knuckles. The key difference while executing a Bent Over Cable Crossover is making sure that your body is bent at the hip with your back flat and parallel to the ground. From the start position, let the weights begin to return to the stack, stopping once the elbows reach behind your torso and then returning to the start. 5:24 - Cable Pullover - We’re only going to need 1 pulley this time`. Make sure the pulley is at the very top and switch out the handle for a straight bar attachment. Get into the start position by grabbing the straight bar with an overhand grip at shoulders width and take a step back, pulling your hands down to your lower thighs. Make sure your elbows and wrists are straight, knees slightly bent and your back flat with the torso at 45-degree angle bent at the waist. Begin by slowly releasing the weight, letting your arms reach as high as above the shoulder, then pulling the weight back down to the start position. Start Losing Your Belly Fat Fast: http://go.sixpackshortcuts.com/never47a1 Hey, everybody. Mark Mcilyar here today to show you one of my favorite at-home exercises I have my beginners doing... Right in their living rooms! First and foremost, make sure you have a sufficient amount of space. You don't need a ton of it, just put your arms extended all the way out to each side, do a 360-degree spin, and make sure nothing in that area is going to get in the way. We will be doing a total of 5 different exercises, all back-to-back with no rest until you finish the first round of all 5 movements.Now, let's get going: 0:39 - Elevated Pushups for 10 reps: Remember that these movements are for beginners. That means if you aren't able to fully complete a set of pushups with proper form - back flat, on your toes, arms holding you up and at a shoulder's width - on the ground, then find an elevated surface to workout with. The higher the surface - my coffee table for example, the easier it's going to be for you to do the move. 1:32 - Air Squats for 10 reps: With your feet just about at a shoulder's width apart, you'll essentially be performing a movement identical to sitting down. Here's the kicker - keep your arms forward and out like I am to keep your back straight, remembering to drop down into the squat until your quads hit parallel or if not as low as your mobility allows. 2:13 - Lying Leg Lifts for 10 reps: Lay flat on your back and place your hands underneath your butt. With your legs together or at most a hip's width apart and your legs locked with a slight bend at the knee, lift your legs off the ground and drive your knees up to become parallel with your hips. 2:47 - Donkey Kicks for 10 reps on each leg: Kneel down on your knees and have your hands in a pushup position - shoulder's width apart and at chest level. From this starting point, you will lift one leg up, keeping the leg you ar moving in a locked position and driving your leg up by focusing on your heel going towards the ceiling. Once you finish one leg, make sure to alternate to the next. 3:34 - Knee Pushups for 10 reps: Another pushup variation, only we are taking the pressure off of staying in a plank position, and you will do the pushups from the same start position as you doing the donkey kicks. There you have it. Do all 5 movements back-to-back and after you finish the round with Knee Pushups, take about a 45 second to 1-minute break. Complete a total of 3 rounds for a complete, bodyweight home workout in as little as 7 minutes. To all the beginners looking to get started working out to lose their belly fat and get in shape: It's only 7 minutes out of your day! Start out just doing this maybe 2 or 3 times a week, and as you get into the swing of things, increase it to 3 or 4. By then, you will be ready to incorporate some resistance training to really build that body you want and know you deserve. Like the routine, we put together for you here today? Leg day is important because if you perform the proper lower body exercises, you can actually boost your body's production of the most important male hormone. Now, this is even more important for guys like Toby and me because we are both over 50. So in this video you'll see our T-boosting leg workout - We will also be showing you key pointers on how to avoid potential injury during some of these more intense leg exercises. Let's get after it! Workout Breakdown: Complete 10-12 reps of the following 4 movements: Back squats, step-ups, leg extensions, alternating lunges. Let's start with warming-up on the back squat. We are going to do about 10 to 12 reps to ensure our joints and ligaments are warmed-up enough to prevent any tweaks or injuries from occurring. In this video, I walk you through the 5 principles to building muscle over 50 and keeping your body strong as you age. Use these principles along with our free resources to get started today! *Use Compound Exercises (1:25) The 5 key exercises to include in the best workouts for men over 50 are Squats, Deadlifts, Rows, Bench Press, and Military press. You may have done these exercise before, but here at the FFP, we show you how to tweak them to keep them safe for aging bodies. It’s important as you get older to do exercises in a way that is safe for your muscles and joints. Incorporating these exercises into workouts for men over 50 can be done in a couple of ways. Firstly, you could do a full body workout that has you completing all 5 exercises 2-3 times per week, just like we show you in our free video (https://fitfatherproject.com/get-free-muscle-workout). You could also do them as an upper/lower body split, where you would do Bench Press, Rows and Military Press on one day and Squats and Deadlifts another day. To increase the duration of the workouts, you could add in some isolation exercises too like extensions, fly’s, curls, etc. *Understand Your Nutrition Needs (3:31) As you look to build muscle over 50, it’s more important to consider your nutrition needs than you did in your 20’s and 30’s. This is because your metabolism lowers as you age and any excess in calories is more likely to be stored as body-fat. You need to prioritize a lean bulking nutrition plan and fuelling your body for building muscle. What I mean by lean bulking is to have the optimum number of calories above your TDEE (Total daily energy expenditure) to aid with building muscle. This should only be between 250 - 500 calories over, so as not to cause fat gain. They are used as a way to optimize the 2 principles above, exercise and nutrition. If you are not following those 2 principles, any amount of supplements will not lead to the gains you want. My recommendations are: Creatine - Increases strength and your ability to push more weight. Also helps preserve muscle, especially in aging guys. 5g to be taken daily. Protein powder - Supports your protein intake and can be taken as Whey, Whey/Casein Blend or a plant-based blend. Should be taken post-workout. Vitamin D3 - Increases testosterone and keeps your immune system strong. Multivitamin - Ensures you're getting optimal levels of vitamins and minerals. Fish Oil - Helps with joint care and brain health. Turmeric/Curcumin - Reduces inflammation, especially in joints. *Get Enough Rest & Recovery (9:42) A little R & R is always good for you, right? When it comes to building muscle over 50, it’s incredibly good for you. You need to aim to improve your sleep and get an absolute minimum of 7 - 7.5 hours of undisturbed sleep each night. To help with sleeping well, you can use Melatonin supplements, Herbal teas, and should avoid using screens for at least 1 hour before bed, to block blue light that can disturb your sleep patterns. *Optimize Testosterone Naturally (10:30) Testosterone is the most important hormone when it comes to building muscle, but as you age your testosterone levels decrease by 1% per year after 30-35 years old. This makes it harder to put on muscle, but easier to gain fat. For this reason, you need to optimize your testosterone levels. Beginner Workout For Men Over 40 - With Clark Bartram & Joe Barlam

Today, I'm going to teach him how to make the most out of his time in the gym. Joe had an athletic background in his past and played a lot of sports... And still does. However, once he hit 40, things just sort of changed. He still plays in a bar softball league and exercises regularly, however it hasn't really been enough to keep the belly fat off. So what I want to do with Joe today is show him how to make the most out of his time here in the gym, not wasting time doing exercises that won't be benefitting him, and make sure that the exercises he's doing are going to keep him safe and functionally fit so he can continue to do them long after he's done here. What we do here at Abs After 40 is use our program to maximize your time in the gym. Who really wants to spend over an hour in the gym? I can get you in and out of the gym in 20 minutes using compound movements that can still change your body and physique, keep you functional, and help you get that stubborn belly fat off. Compound movements, in case you didn't know, are the opposite of isolation movements. Compound movements involve using more than one muscle group. So instead of a bicep curl, you would do a pull-up. The bicep curl only uses your bicep, while the pull up involves a lot of different muscles from the back and also the arms. Before starting any exercise program, of course, make sure you're being safe and make sure you consult your physician beforehand. Workout Breakdown: 5:56 - Deadlift Demonstration: Walk to the bar. Stand with your mid-foot under the bar. Don't touch it with your shins yet. Bend over and grab the bar with your hands directly outside of your legs. Legs should be about shoulder/hip width apart. Bend your knees. Keep going until your shins touch the bar and your butt comes down. Lift your chest. Straighten your back, and Pull straight up, pushing your heels and midfoot into the ground. You should end up standing completely straight with chest up, shoulders back, and legs straight. 10:49 - Squat Push Press Demonstration: Using a shorter bar, we're going to pick it up and put it in a position where it's basically resting on our chest, but also your hands underneath it will support it. With Legs slightly wider than shoulder width apart, you will start the movement. From here, you're just going to drop your butt straight down, pushing your knees to the outside of your body (never let them dip inward) and once you reach the bottom of the squat (your hips should end up below your knees but this may not work for some people, so you don't have to go that low), powerfully push yourself back to standing while also pressing the barbell above your head. Make sure to always keep good posture during this movement, keeping your abs tight and your chest up. From the top of the position, just slowly lower the barbell back down and go into your next repetition, squatting down again. 12:50 - Joe's attempt, additional coaching. Make sure to keep your weight in your heels and the middle of the foot rather than the toes. This movement is great because we're working just about every muscle in the body, from the legs, arms, shoulders, and core for stabilization. 15:07 - Second Set/attempts. 17:40 - Lunge-Curl Demonstration: Stand holding a light dumbbell in each hand and step forward into a lunge with your left leg (lower your body until your right knee nearly touches the floor). At the bottom of the lunge, curl those dumbbells up, and lower them as you push yourself back to the starting position. Make sure that as you lunge, your bent knee stays behind the toe (of the leg that you are stepping forward with). 20:17 - Joe's Demonstration of the Lunge-Curl. I want to note that Joe wasn't using any crazy heavy weights. Let's remember that Rome wasn't built in a day and the first thing we need to do is make sure we're getting the movement correct first - then we can increase the weight and continue working on the strength. You absolutely need to take things slowly and avoid getting hurt, because getting injured by having a big ego is just going to set you back further in approaching your goals. This is a great workout to start doing at home if you don't have a gym membership, when you don't have time to go to the gym, or when you’re traveling and don't have any gym access. It’s only 5-minutes too, guys, so all you need is a timer for this workout - no excuses for you not to get going. Here is the routine breakdown: You’ll be doing 30-second intervals of: #1 - Step-back lunges: These are great for developing a strong core as well as doing that HIIT cardio - make sure to drive your knees up as high as you can, then stepping back and dropping the knee as close to the ground as you can - don’t drop and smash your knees down. #2 - Plank: Hold the pose and keep your core engaged for 30 seconds. Make fists with your hands and have your elbows and forearms touching the ground to keep you up. Remember to have a straight back and your core tight the whole time. #3 - Knee-to-elbow-crunches: Do NOT put your hands behind your head to pull yourself up - this is a core workout so use the core. Keep only your fingers touching the side of your head and as you crunch up to your knees bring the elbows in to touch them together. This is going to be a fantastic workout to work your core and incorporates some HIIT cardio - that’s high-intensity interval training for you guys that don’t know. This kind of cardio is A LOT more effective than hopping on the treadmill for 20+ minutes at a time. Like I said, 5 minutes for this workout and that’s it! So, you’ll do these workouts back-to-back with no rest until the round is over - wait 30 seconds, then hit it again. To complete the workout, you will do 3 rounds total. See, wasn't that quick?
