The Story of LeSS - Voxxed Days Singapore 2018

50:26
Speaker: Bas Vodde (THE LESS) This talk is based on story-telling, where Bas will share the creation of LeSS and within that side-track on explaining better how LeSS works. Expect most of the session to be in story format and not in typical introduction to X format. LeSS is a lightweight (agile) framework for scaling Scrum to more than one team. It was extracted out of the experiences of Bas Vodde and Craig Larman while Scaling Agile development in many different types of companies, products and industries over the last ten years. There are several case studies available and an upcoming book describing LeSS in detail. LeSS consists of the LeSS Principles, the Framework, the Guides and a set of experiments. The LeSS framework is divided into two frameworks: basic LeSS for 2-8 teams and LeSS Huge for 8+ teams. All of these are also available on the less.works website. LeSS is different with other scaling frameworks in the sense that it provides a very minimalistic framework that enables empiricism on a large-scale which enables the teams and organization to inspect-adapt their implementation based on their experiences and context. LeSS is based on the idea that providing too much rules, roles, artifacts and asking the organization to tailor it down is a fundamentally flawed approach and instead scaling frameworks should be minimalistic and allowing organizations to fill them in. Bas Vodde is a coach, programmer, trainer, and author related to modern agile and lean product development. He is the creator of the LeSS (Large-Scale Scrum) framework for scaling agile development. He coaches organizations on three levels: organizational, team, individual/technical practices. He has trained thousands of people in software development, Scrum, and modern agile practices for over a decade. He is the author of Large-Scale Scrum: More with LeSS, Scaling Agile and Lean Development: Thinking and Organizational Tools for Large-Scale Scrum and of Practices for Large-Scale Agile and Lean Development, all together with Craig Larman. Bas works for Odd-e, a company which supports organizations in improving their product development, mostly in Asia. Bas currently lives in Singapore where he ended up after living in Holland (born), China and Finland. He worked in start-ups and in very traditional environments. This last uncomfortable experience convinced him that agile and lean development is a more human way of developing software products — no matter how large your development is. He had the opportunity to introduce Agile Development (particularly Scrum) in Nokia Networks (formally NSN) but had to move to Helsinki. There he watched dozens of product groups adopt scrum and other agile practices. The extreme cold in Finland forced him to migrate south and back to China where he focused on one large product group and its Scrum adoption. Bas is interested in Scrum with a special focus on large companies and large product development. But he also enjoyed working on technical practices, especially test-driven development (particularly in embedded environments) and continuous integration. He keeps working as a developer because he strongly believes you need a well-factored code base if you want to be fast and flexible. His hobbies are studies in lean production and quality management and, of course, programming. Bas is also one of the authors of the CppUTest unit test framework for C/C++ and of Osaka a Mac UI automation framework written in Ruby.

The economics of open source by C J Silverio | JSConf EU 2019

The JS package commons is in the hands of a for-profit entity. We trust npm with our shared code, but we have no way to hold npm accountable for its behavior. A trust-based system cannot function without accountability, but somebody still has to pay for the servers. How did we get here, and what should JavaScript do now? https://2019.jsconf.eu/c-j-silverio/the-economics-of-open-source.html

"Why should I hire you?" - Best Interview Questions and Answers

WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU is often the last question you will be asked in an interview. Prepare for it. This is your chance to restate the skills you possess that are most relevant to the position and to summarize your other qualities that make you the perfect person for the job, and that's why they should hire you. Outline your answer before you go in, so that you can answer clearly, concisely, and with confidence. Your answer should be short and to the point. It should reflect your professional background as it relates to current needs and problems of the position. Review the job description and tell how you are the right person for the job by matching up your skill set with each bullet point of the job description. In formulating your answer as to why they should hire you, be sure to address these areas: 1. Determine their goals for the position. This should come up during your research into the company and the position. If possible, talk to others who work for the company. If you are unclear on this point, include it in the questions you ask at the interview and be prepared to incorporate it into your answer. 2. Show you have the skills needed for the job. Based on the goals you have identified in step one, determine how your skills and experience support those goals. If necessary, refer back to your list of skills. Ecosystems are larger, more diverse, and more fluid than a traditional set of bilateral partnerships or complementors. By leveraging ecosystems, companies can deliver complex solutions while maintaining corporate focus. This article describes six keys to unlock ecosystem advantage: pinpointing where value is created, defining an architecture of differentiated partner roles, stimulating complementary partner investments, reducing the transaction costs, facilitating joint learning across the network, and engineering effective ways to capture profit. Friction - Agile Singapore Conference 2016

44:08
Speaker: Mary Poppendieck (@mpoppendieck), Owner @ Poppendieck.LLC You have great software engineers. They work on autonomous product teams that deliver frequently. The products are doing well. But -- there is always a But. Things could be better. Something is frustrating team members or disappointing customers or slowing things down. What is it? Friction. No matter how well things are going, there will always be friction. Consumers experience friction when using your product. Friction delays a team's response to a product request. Friction makes the code difficult to change. Differing expectations create friction among team members. Competing goals create friction between teams. This talk looks at the most common sources of friction in software systems, and present patterns for reducing friction that can be used again -- and again -- to identify and address points of friction on an on-going basis. About the speaker Mary Poppendieck started her career as a process control programmer, moved on to manage the IT department of a manufacturing plant, and then ended up in product development, where she was both a product champion and department manager. Mary considered retirement 1998, but instead found herself managing a government software project where she first encountered the word "waterfall." When Mary compared her experience in successful software and product development to the prevailing opinions about how to manage software projects, she decided the time had come for a new paradigm. She wrote the award-winning book Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit in 2003 to explain how the lean principles from manufacturing offer a better approach to software development. Over the past several years, Mary has found retirement elusive as she lectures and teaches classes with her husband Tom. Based on their on-going learning, they wrote a second book,Implementing Lean Software Development: From Concept to Cash in 2006, a third, Leading Lean Software Development: Results are Not the Point in 2009, and a fourth book, The Lean Mindset: Ask the Right Questions in 2013. A popular writer and speaker, Mary continues to bring fresh perspectives to the world of software development. Cathay Pacific Airbus A350 XWB Business Class Singapore to Bangkok Review

11:06
This was my first time on Cathay Pacific's new Airbus A350 aircraft, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the experience was. This trip started at Singapore's Changi Airport Terminal 1. Upon check-in, we were given lounge invitations to the DNATA Lounge. The lounge was recently renovated and it is beautiful compared how it was a few years back. The lounge has some decent hot food and beverage offerings. It also offers plenty of seating, and shower rooms. We left the lounge about 45 minutes before departure. A few minutes walk to the gate, and we were able to take a glimpse of the beautiful Airbus A350-900 XWB aircraft. We didn't have to wait long at the gate as Business Class passengers had priority boarding. Upon boarding the aircraft, I noticed how fresh and airy the business class cabin was. The ceiling were high, and the cabin was bright. I found my seat 15A (my companion was in 14A) on the port side of the plane. Upon settling in, the friendly flight attendant offered us a pre-departure beverage and hot towel. I opted for the champagne. The seats on the Airbus A350 is similar to Cathay's current reverse herringbone business class seats (Zodiac Cirrus) offered on their long haul configured Boeing 777 and A330 aircrafts, although this feels more spacious and beautifully updated. The overhead bins are massive. We tried putting our carry on luggage on its side, wheels in and it was able to fit. After a few more minutes, we pushed back and we were on our way to Bangkok.During taxi, the Cabin Manager came by to introduce herself and thanked us for being OneWorld Emerald. After take off, the flight attendants offered more drinks, and then took our meal orders. I ordered the steamed chicken, chinese ham, and rice, and it was delicious! I finished the meal with some ice cream and Hong Kong style milk tea. After the meal, I decided to visit the lavatory. It was clean, spacious, and had a window. It had a touchless faucet, Jurlique skin products, and the signature Cathay fresh Orchid. Upon returning to my seat, I decided to checkout the in-flight entertainment and was amazed at how snappy and intuitive the interface was. I particularly loved the moving map app, as well as the exterior camera mounted on the nose and tail of the aircraft. The movie, audio, and games selection were decent and offered both Western and Asian selections. Before I knew it, the Captain came on the PA announcing our decent into Bangkok. Landing was a bit hard, but uneventful. The hard product on this flight was amazing! Top that with a consistent business class service offered by Cathay's Flight attendants made it an exceptional short flight. I give this flight a 9.5 out of 10. iPad Pro 12.9 inch Smart Folio Keyboard from Krishop Singapore Airlines Inflight delivery!

01:39
Singapore Airlines Krishop made my day! First time buying from Kris Shop. The product was the smart folio keyboard for the new iPad Pro 12.9 inch. The product was out of stock in Singapore and London! The delivery date kept being pushed back and probably the Apple store won’t carry it till after Christmas! So when my wife found out that the Krishop carried the product, and since I was flying to London, it was time to try the service, and they could even deliver the product to my seat. I bought the product online a few days before my flight, and chose the option to collect the keyboard on board the plane. How exciting! Once on board, I asked a stewardess whether my product was on board. She asked me to wait as the cabin crew would open the shopping cart only after the first meal service. Fair enough, anyway it would be a long flight so I had plenty of time, though I remarked that I was afraid I might forget to ask. She told me don’t worry, they will take care of it. True enough, shortly after the meal service, another stewardess approached me with a sealed bag, containing the smart folio keyboard. Very awesome service! Thanks SIA! I was flying on SQ318, Singapore to London. Full flight review is here - https://youtu.be/2sYzbsXW2S4. This flight had many firsts for me. 1) First time using Krisshop (https://www.krisshopair.com) - purchased the iPad Pro 12.9inch Smart Folio Keyboard online, and got it delivered in-flight! The smart folio keyboard was out of stock in Singapore and I needed it for a Christmas gift. Awesome service! In fact, when I last checked on 24th Dec 2018, the smart folio keyboard for the iPad Pro 12.9inch was still out of stock, with the expected delivery date of 10th Jan 2019! Literally next year. 2) First time I saw all four colours of the Singapore Girl Kebaya on the same flight. The four colours are blue (flight stewardess), green (leading stewardess), red (chief stewardess) and burgundy (inflight supervisor/manager). And my cheese plate was served by the inflight supervisor. 3) First time I chose an Indian inspired dish on any SQ flight that I can remember. A light dinner before landing was served and I chose the Indian-inspired Nasi Biryani option, which was awesome! 4) First time I tried the Seared Black Cod Fillet 'à la Niçoise in the Book the Cook menu, and it was awesome! 5) First time I flew on a day flight in Business class to London. This resulted in me not getting very much sleep though, as my body clock was in daytime mode. 6) First time I received an amenity kit on SQ Business class. I don't recall any such kit in all my previous flights. SQ called it the Travel Gift pack. On top of typical items like lip balm, there were also items for onward travel. Fascinating. 7) First time I had the wonderful view of a clear night's sky during the approach into London Heathrow. The lights were amazing! Canary Wharf was exceptionally bright at night. The full landing video is here - https://youtu.be/fFSdb8VEJiM 8) First time watching Crazy Rich Asians, the Hollywood movie with an all-Asian leading cast, featuring my home country of Singapore! Ok, 99.99% of people living in Singapore are nowhere as rich as the family featured in the film. But hey, that's a movie. The scenes from Singapore were great. Overall, an awesome experience, made better by the delivery of the iPad Pro smart folio to my seat! --------------------------------------------------------------------

They were raised in the same home, with the same parents, had the same IQ, same skills and same opportunities. Each was married and had two children. They were all carpenters making $25 per hour. While they were very similar in all these respects, they had different priorities. For example, Tom, chose to work 20 hours per week, while his brother, Dick worked 40 hours and Harry 60. It should also be noted that Harry's wife worked full time as an office manager for a salary of $50,000. Dick's wife sold real estate part time 10 hours a week and made $25,000 per year. Tom's wife did not work. Tom and Dick spent all of their family income. Since they paid into Social Security they figured, they didn't need to save for retirement. Harry and his wife, on the other hand, had, over many years, put away money each month and invested it in stocks and bonds. Here's how it worked out: Tom made $25,000 a year, Dick and his wife made $75,000 and Harry and his wife, $150,000. When a new housing development opened up in their community, the brothers decided to buy equally-priced homes on the same private street. One day the brothers decided to pool their funds for the purpose of improving their street. Concerned about crime and safety, and wanting a more attractive setting for their homes, the three families decided to install a security gate at the street's entrance; repave the street's surface; and enhance the lighting and landscaping. The work was done for a total cost of $30,000. Harry assumed they would divide the bill three ways, each brother paying $10,000. But Tom and Dick objected. "Why should we pay the same as you?" they said. "You make much more money than we do." Harry was puzzled. "What does that have to do with anything?" he asked. "My family makes more money because my wife and I work long hours, and because we have saved some of the money we've earned to make additional money from investments. Why should we be penalized for that?" "Harry, you can work and save all you like" Tom countered. "But my wife and I want to enjoy ourselves now, not 25 years from now." "Fine, Tom. Do what you want. It's a free country. But why should I have to pay for that? "I can't believe your being so... unbrotherly," Tom argued. "You have a lot of money and I don't. I thought you'd be more generous." At this point, Dick, the peacemaker in the family, entered the conversation. "I've got an idea," Dick said. "Our combined income is $250,000, and $30,000 is 12 percent of that amount. Why don't we each pay that percentage of our income? Under that formula, Tom would pay $3,000, I would pay $9,000, and Harry would pay $18,000." "I have a much better idea," said Tom. "And one that's fairer than what you're proposing." For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/progressive-income-tax-tale-three-brothers

The application for the Food Shop License must be accompanied by the following supporting documents: • A photocopy of one of the following (where applicable): o Both sides of identity card [for application as Individual] or o Business profile of the company or o Certificate of registration from Registrar of Societies • A scaled metric layout plan of the premises showing the layout in the kitchen, preparation area, refreshment area, toilets, stores, etc. • Tenancy agreement between the landlord and the applicant. • Approval(s) from Housing Development Board (HDB) [for HDB premises only], Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) & / or Building and Construction Authority (BCA) [where applicable] • The list of food handlers employed. • Typhoid inoculation certificates for food handlers. • X-ray certificates for food handlers aged 45 years old and above. • The list of Food Hygiene Officers employed using the prescribed form obtainable from the relevant Regional Office.
