Family of 7 Living Completely Off-Grid in Northern Canada!
In this video, we meet Jeff, Rose, and their 5 girls who are living completely off grid on a 40-acre piece of land in Northern British Columbia, Canada. They built their own off-grid house for less than $25,000 with cedar posts sunk into the ground like a pole barn, log rafters, plywood, foam insulation, and a living roof. The house was so affordable to build because they didn't have to excavate or pour a concrete foundation, dig a well, or install a septic system. They have 2 solar power systems to power everything they need. The first solar system is just one solar panel that generates 12-Volt power for their lights, cell phones, and music player. The larger system is a 2.5 Kilowatt solar power system installed on their shop roof with a lithium ion battery bank that powers their full-sized fridge, a chest freezer, washing machine, as well as a mixer, blender and a toaster. They have a backup generator but they only have to use it for about 40 hours per year during prolonged cloudy or snowy periods. All of the water the family uses is rainwater collected from their shop roof and stored in a tank under the shop floor to keep it cool. They carry buckets of water into the house for cooking, dishes and showers. To produce clean drinking water, they filter their rainwater in a passive water filter called a Burkey (check them out here: http://www.berkeyfilters.com). The grey water from their kitchen sink and shower drains into a shallow grey water field in the backyard. They have 2 composting bucket toilets and they sprinkle sawdust into the buckets after each use to absorb moisture and prevent smells. For heat, they cut their own firewood for their Blaze King catalytic wood stove, and for their antique cookstove in the kitchen that they use for cooking and baking. Jeff and Rose homeschool their 5 girls for a few hours each day and also ensure that their kids are learning diverse life skills like growing their own food, caring for horses, raising bees, and more. We're very impressed with the clever solutions this family has come up with to make off-grid living seem so easy. If you want to learn more about this inspiring family and follow their journey, check out their Gridlessness project — they have a blog and a YouTube channel. What It Costs To Live in Toronto | Making It
Canada is often lauded for its healthcare system but if you’re trying to buy a place in Toronto, the housing market can be daunting. Home prices jumped by 33.2% in March 2017 from March 2016. Beyond real estate costs, how are Torontonians keeping up? We spent a day with Toronto native, Jalisa Luces-Mendes, a part-time researcher and fashion line owner. Coming from a family involved in real estate, Jalisa dreamt of owning a home by the age of 26 which she says is now not attainable. She added, “I still can’t afford to live in my own family’s property.” According to the Economist's latest Cost of Living Index, Toronto ranks 86th out of 133 major cities surveyed however the index doesn’t account for housing costs. The Reality of Living in the Canadian Wilderness in Winter | Building a Sauna with Hand Tools
#logcabin #offgrid #winter Wind and snow continue to make life difficult for Cali and I as we deal with a harsh Canadian winter. Wind whips across the lakes and buffets the log cabin while I continue raising the walls of the log sauna before a Polar Vortex settles over the area for the next few days. Hot soup made with fresh walleye/pickerel and coconut milk cooked on the wood-fired stove in the off grid kitchen thaws me out before settling in for a cold, windy night in the cabin. Food Prices in Canada | Costs of Living in Canada | Supermarket Tour in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Food Prices in Canada Costs of Living in Canada Supermarket Tour in Ottawa Ontario Canada In this video I am going to give you an average supermarket tour in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I am going to show you the real food / grocery prices in Canada. Hope you enjoy it and will comment bellow. Canada's after-tax monthly income is about $3,000 which totals around $36,000per year. The U.S. sits just below Canada at approximately $2,942 per month, or roughly $35,300 per year. The real difference is seen in the cost of living. ... Finally, clothing is more expensive in Canada than in the United States. In the U.S. you are only paying about CAD $44. Finally, clothing is more expensive in Canada than in the United States. ... If all the little things are added that cost more in Canada, the total is far more than the CAD $700 salary difference that was originally stated. By this measure, the U.S. is cheaper to live in. Most people from the UK and Europe find the cost of living in Canada is significantly lower than their home country. Canadian housing can be cheap compared with other developed nations – the average house price in Canada is around nine times the average annual wage. Though in some provinces, such as New Brunswick, it is as low as four times the annual wage. Prices are highest in Ontario (ten times the average wage) and Vancouver (fourteen times the average wage). People moving to Canada with the proceeds of house sales from countries with more expensive housing can often buy a house in Canada with a considerably reduced mortgage. This leaves more of their income for other activities and lowers their cost of living in Canada significantly. Compared with many other western countries, although not the USA: ›› Food is cheaper in Canada. ›› Dining out and most forms of recreation are cheaper in Canada. ›› Petrol / Gasoline and cars are cheaper in Canada. ›› Power is cheaper, but you use more power to heat your house in a typical Canadian winter. ›› Car insurance is very expensive in Canada. Mercer carried out an extensive cost of living survey for overseas workers in 2018. The survey covers 209 cities and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. The survey revealed that Toronto and Vancouver (joint 109th) has the highest cost of living in Canada, followed by Montreal (147th), Calgary (154th) and Ottawa (160th). The survey found that Canadian cities have lower living costs than many other locations in the developed world. Since the last survey Canada as a whole is becoming slightly more expensive relative to other cities. Toronto (109th), jumped ten places due to an increase in expatriate rental accommodation costs. The rankings for Canadian cities out of the 209 cities surveyed are: Vancouver (109th) Toronto (109th) Montreal (147th) Calgary (154th) Ottawa (160th) Basic expenses Food will be a basic expense. Costs will depend on the size of your family. This cost can double if you often eat in restaurants or choose to buy specialty items. Clothing expenses may be less than 10% of your take-home pay. You may spend a lot more if you buy your clothing at designer stores. Second-hand shops sell used clothing and furniture at very low cost. Alcohol and cigarettes Some people include alcohol and cigarettes as part of their budget. Alcohol and cigarettes are expensive in Canada because they are heavily taxed. Transportation Many Canadian families have one or more cars. Canadians either buy their cars new or used or they lease them, which is a form of rental. Make sure you think of all the costs before you decide to buy or lease a car. For example, when you own a car you will have to pay to keep it working well, for gas, monthly loan payments, registration and insurance. When you lease a car you will sign a contract to have the car for a set period of time. You will pay the same costs as you do when you own a car. Many Canadians use public transportation, walk or bike. #canada #ottawa #ontario #costofliving #livingincanda #lifeincanada #canadaprices #immigration #immigrationtocanada #foodprices #foodincanada #food #supermarket #ottawatour #ontariocanada #visitontario #visitcanada #costsofliving #canadian #quebec #bc #toronto #canadalife Please subscribe to worldbytomas YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4PHOaFl8wbJiwVIr5y84ew Follow worldbytomas on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/worldbytomas/ Follow worldbytomas on Twitter https://www.twitter.com/worldbytomas/ Like worldbytomas on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/worldbytomas/

Top 10 Best Places To Live In Canada
Top 10 Best Places To Live In Canada In 2017: Canada’s capital was named best place to live for new Canadians in a scoring system that gave extra weight to unemployment rate, average rent and cultural diversity when comparing cities across the provinces and territories. New Canadian immigrants should be beating a path to Ottawa, according to new rankings from MoneySense magazine. Ottawa also topped the overall poll in a study that incorporated everything from average income to taxes, crime and weather. You do not have to travel too far for the second place city for newcomers, with Quebec City of Gatineau, just across the river, filling the runner-up spot. When you first immigrated to Canada, you probably chose your city or town of destination based on several factors: You might have already had family or friends in that city. You had visited the city before and liked it. You had done your research and believed it was the right choice for you based on what the city had to offer in amenities, employment and climate. But Canada is a large and diverse country, with many different provinces and municipalities that could make your Canadian experience vastly different depending on where you are located. If you haven’t settled in permanently yet, have you thought about exploring what other municipalities have to offer you, both in and outside your chosen province? Here're the 10 best places to live in Canada: 1. Ottawa, Ontario. 2. Gatineau, Quebec. 3. Waterloo, Ontario. 4. Brossard, Quebec. 5. Delta, British Columbia. 6. Saanich, British Columbia. 7. Burlington, Ontario. 8. Regina, Saskatchewan. 9. St. Albert, Alberta. 10. Guelph, Ontario. Thanks for watching this video. I hope it's useful for you. Mexico - International Living's Top Retirement Haven 2017
The New Year means “Auld Lang Syne,” a new set of resolutions…and the publication of International Living’s latest Annual Global Retirement Index. And this year the top spot goes to Mexico, our North American neighbor to the south. Every year International Living’s in-house experts and worldwide network of correspondents compile data on a growing number of countries—24 for this year’s index. We rate cost of living, real estate, climate, healthcare, and a whole host of other factors to find the most affordable, convenient, and comfortable countries in which to retire abroad. Mexico always features among our top 10 destinations in the Index, and usually among our top five. It’s home to more North American expats than any other country in the world. And no wonder. Mexico offers a diverse geography, with everything from white-sand beaches to high-mountain colonial cities. Its climate ranges from moist, tropical heat to dry desert and everything in between. It is rich in casual beach towns, vibrant Spanish-colonial cities, and small country villages. Low prices, friendly people, and a laidback lifestyle are also found here… And today, with the Mexican peso at historic lows against the U.S. dollar, Mexico is more affordable than it’s been in years. Well over a million U.S. and Canadian expats are estimated to live in Mexico already, either full- or part-time. As a result, you’ll find a plethora of expat havens in Mexico…places where you can settle in easily and make yourself at home. To learn more about what Mexico, as well as our other top retirement destinations, can offer you, as well as how to receive your free Global Retirement Index 2017 report, see here: https://internationalliving.com/2017/01/the-best-places-to-retire/

Woman Spends 3 Years Living in a Modern, Off Grid Tiny House
Dawn built her modern off-grid tiny house in a solar powered work shop in Nova Scotia, Canada with her business partners, Jennifer and James, from Full Moon Tiny Shelters (http://fullmoontinyshelters.com/). In this video we meet Dawn and learn why she was inspired to build her tiny house, how she adapted her life to fit in a small space, and why she thinks tiny houses are here to stay. We also take a tour of her amazing home. She loves to cook and spends a lot of time on the floor doing yoga, meditation and sound healing so she designed her tiny house according to her needs with a furniture-less living room and a large galley kitchen giving it a very open concept feel. The open space in the tiny house has a beautiful energy, especially when Dawn is drumming or playing her monochord. It's obvious that "Harmony House" was the perfect nickname for this luxury musical micro cabin on wheels. To heat the tiny house, Dawn has installed a Danish wood stove made by Morsø and she uses sawdust bricks which are more portable for her than firewood. To learn more about the stove: http://morsoe.com/us/frontpage Full Moon Tiny Shelters has built some of the best quality and most beautiful tiny houses we've seen so far and we love that they're built in an off-grid workshop, too. It's worth your time to check out the photo gallery on their website and to follow them on Facebook: http://fullmoontinyshelters.com/ https://www.facebook.com/fullmoontinyshelters/ Thanks for watching!
