So, if you’ve been using age as an excuse to sit around and play video games or bingo, get up and sign up. But I’m not going to lie to you. If you’re 30 years old and have never taken a martial arts class, and your dream is to become a UFC champ or a gold medalist in Olympic Judo, okay--it's too late for that! But if your goal is to simply to improve your life—you want to get fit, toughen up, learn some self-defense, develop your balance, strength, and flexibility—then go sign up for classes right now. Be gentle with yourself. If you can only make it to class one day a week, it will still be worth it. Even a little martial arts makes life a whole lot better! Yes, training in the martial arts is a little more difficult as you get older. I admit that. In my teens, I’d wake up a little sore from working out, but could recover over breakfast and be back to full power by lunch. Now, in my late 40’s, it takes a week or two to heal up! Don’t get me wrong--I can still hit just as hard as I could when I was 20... just not all day, every day. Which brings me to the secret to success for martial artists in old age... Mindset. For example, I tied on a white belt in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class when I was 40. In that class, there were a bunch of terrifying 20-year-olds. And when a 40-year-old tries to match up with terrifying 20-year-olds, let me tell you, the 40-year-old goes home in pain and feeling like a loser. But when I stopped trying to be 20 and changed my goal to becoming the most terrifying 40-year-old I could be, everything got easier. So, no matter what your age, accept who you are, what you can do, and what you can’t do. The older you get, the more wisdom you should have to know the difference. Bottom line-- I don’t care how old you are, if you’ve always wanted to try the martial arts, do it. If you quit martial arts years ago and now you’re worried that it’s too late to catch up, well, every day you think like that you’re only falling farther behind. Life is short, my friend. If you want to do something, do it now. Otherwise, you’ll end up sitting in the same place five years from now thinking, “Man, I wish I started five years ago.” Yes, as an older martial artist, the road may be a little steeper, your journey may take few more twists and turns, but I promise, the climb is still worth it. I started at age 40 with a plan to change my body, this is how I looked…with many serious health issues. Fast forward and I am now nearly 51, this is a photo of me taken last week. EVERY YEAR I have managed to increase size, shape and aesthetics even past the age of 50. This is my 10-point plan for obtaining a muscular body after the age of 40: Point 1 Sitting on the coach with a beer in one hand, fat tummy, watching tv and generally look bad, what you don’t realize is that what you are doing is slowly dying and killing yourself. You need to look life in the eye again, you need to choose life, get up and LIVE again. You need to change yourself from the inside. Appreciate the small things in life, start caring for people in need, make right with God, start liking the person you see inside and out and respect yourself. Such life altering choices make one want to get up and LIVE and go to gym to re-invent your body. Such choices make the whole process so much easier and WORTHWHILE… Point 2 Diet determines 80% of your bodybuilding success. You REALLY need to get to grip with this. If you are not prepared to follow proper muscle growth diet guidelines your body will not respond even to the best training and best supplements regimes. Your results will be very mediocre at best. This is what separate the hero’s from the average…the diet! No two bodies re-act the same to the exact same diet. Every 14 days you need to monitor how your body reacted the past 14 day to the diet to determine if you lost muscle weight (bad), fat (good) or both (bad) and then adjust the diet accordingly in a specific fashion. It is not as difficult as it sounds, here is a link to the exact process you need to follow: http://gertlouw.com/2015/06/01/forcin... Point 4 Training determines 15% of your bodybuilding success. Next to diet this is 2nd most important. You must train at least 4 times a week and not more than 5. At age above 40 the body need more time to recover and grow, I find 4 the best balance (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Frid). Less than 4 is not advisable. It is too infrequent training and put you in danger of injury and is not conducive to muscle growth. Keep sessions never longer than 90 mins preferably 50 min. Point5 Training MUST be split as follows due the body being older than 40: • 3 months building phase (6-8 reps per set, EACH set to complete muscle failure) • 1 week rest • 3 month cutting phase (12 – 20 reps per set , 30% lighter weights, never to failure) • 1 week rest • repeat The above training regime allows for a serious 3 month growth spurge but place serious strain on tendons and joints which then need to recover and strengthen during the cutting phase. You cannot start training top failure you need at least a 3 month period of gradual weekly weight and intensity increases to reach the starting point of muscle failure for the next 3 month with the building phase program. Point 6 During the building (growth) phase you MUST train to absolute muscle failure on each set. This is a key principle for growth. Failure means total and utter failure – mentally and physically you must not be able to lift that weight one more set. If you train with sufficient failure intensity you WILL grow! You Can’t Build Muscle Over 35 Without TRT!

For those who are not sure what that is, TRT is testosterone replacement therapy. Some would have you believe that seeing any kind of progress after a certain age is dependent on you resorting to synthetic means and shortcuts. That is simply not true. In this video, I’m going to tell you the real problem with making statements like this. Honestly, they have no impact on me personally, even when those statements expand into accusations that I achieve my look by using the same things. I can tell you that as a one hundred percent natural lifter my entire life, there is nothing more encouraging and rewarding than someone believing you use drugs to look the way you do. It is mind blowing actually, especially considering that fact that I used to train at home exclusively or pick odd hours to train at a gym so that I would not have to run into too many people since I already felt self conscious about my body and my strength. No, the real harm in these kind of statements, especially those made with such conviction, is that they do two incredibly bad things. First, they lower the bar on what is possible. Are you kidding me? No gains after the age of 35? Really? I bet you can think of 5 guys right away that look better after the age of 40 than they did in their 20’s and they have resorted to nothing but hard work, a commitment to training and most importantly, eating well. The second big thing is this “loser” and “quitter” mentality serves to discourage those on the fence from starting to dedicate themselves from improving their level of fitness. Think about it. If you are not committed to training and you are online looking for videos on how to get started and you run across that comment, you’re going to possibly be defeated before you even begin. You may think, it’s not in the cards for me either. He’s right. There is no hope for me since I’m not going to be able to take things like TRT so I can’t look good. What happens is this. The quitter, angry about his inability to commit (and refusing to look himself in the mirror and admit that his efforts have been anything but truly committed and stellar) wishes to drag others into his misery and disappointment. Nobody likes to fail alone. Always remember that. If they can find a way to discourage or disparage the achievements of others it somehow makes them feel better about themselves and their inability to achieve. I have to say, in almost every one of these instances, if I were to actually watch a workout performed by this type of individual it would not be anywhere near the level of effort needed to make change. If I were to analyze their nutrition for even a single day, it wouldn’t take me more than 4 seconds to identify exactly why they don’t have the level of body fat they are desiring. Unfortunately, you won’t get this information. The person who leaves these type of comments hides behind their own insecurities and never shares the real truth about why they have failed. But this is not you. You watch this channel because you want the best, most scientific, no nonsense advice on how to train like an athlete, eat like an athlete and look like an athlete 365 days a year without resorting to dangerous drugs or gimmicks. Now in the 21st century marriage is no longer a necessity but rather an option, and many women choose to remain single. Yet, there is not enough social security for them, creating a blind spot of the structural system. Let’s learn more about the issue, and what needs to be done to improve the current conditions. Jeong Eun-mi is a 41 year-old florist who dreamed of becoming a good wife and wise mother as a child. Like the majority of people, she thought she had to get married and form a family when she was younger. But her perspective has changed a lot. "I gained a genuine passion and desire for my career in my early 30’s. Therefore, I naturally focused more on my work than romantic relationships, and time passed very quickly." Jeong is not the only one who chooses to remain unmarried. Many women in their 30’s and 40’s do, too. According to the National Statistical Office, 1 million 384 thousand and 47 women in their 30’s and 40’s were single as of 2015, and that figure is more than twice that of 10 years ago. The drastic jump largely resulted from women’s increased labor force participation. Also, Korea remains a patriarchal society. "Marriage is not only a union of two lovers but of families, which I found very burdensome. I wasn’t sure if I could take care of all the things that occur in my husband’s family while pursuing my career." Currently, 40% of female workers have irregular jobs and earn about US$1,500 per month on average. Indeed, the low income has a negative influence on housing stability. "The majority of single women live alone, and their residential environments vary depending on economic status. Naturally, there are concerns about women being targets of sexual assault and other crimes, especially for those living in poorer areas, as it is clear that the number of violent crimes against women has been increasing recently." A recent survey conducted by the Seoul metropolitan government on women in their 40’s and 50’s living alone, only 36.9% responded that they were preparing for old age. Also, 81.2% of them answered that they were unable to prepare for their later years because they couldn’t afford to do so. But there’s barely any governmental support for them. 39-year old Kim Hyun-joo works for the cooperative society of an animal hospital in Seoul. And she mentioned that Korean single women are stuck in the blind spot of social welfare. More than anything, the biggest fear comes from the fact that there are many structural limits if they suffer from any diseases. "If I need medical surgery, only my direct family members are eligible to sign the consent form. I currently live with my friend, who is single as well, but she would not be eligible to sign the form even if my life depended on it. " As a cat owner, Kim formed a gathering of fellow single women with animal companions. The best thing about this gathering is that they have good neighbors to rely on in times of emergency, who also have the same interest and concerns. "There are certain hardships we experience because we chose to remain unmarried. We share those things, relate to one another and get healed along the way. " Outside the welfare system, single women have to find their own means to secure their futures, and they’re calling on a change in the family-centered social policies. "Because the tax system, welfare policies, and even the medical insurance system are designed for families, they alienate unmarried women and single-person households. Therefore, our society needs to find ways to embrace and support them rather than merely trying to treat the symptoms." For marriage to be truly an option for both genders, the general perception towards singles should be transformed along with new practical policies to meet their needs. Building muscle at any age is a lot less dependent on reps and sets than most people think. -Muscle is muscle at any age and responds to stimulation pretty much the same across the board. -The most important factor is Intensity, (going to failure and beyond). -Survey performed on two groups of participants to determine how high and low Rep ranges effect muscle development: Group A did low rep ranges to failure (8-12 reps), Group B did high rep ranges to failure (25-30 reps). Both groups gained about the same amount of muscle during the testing period. The basic idea for this age group is casual layering. Definitely, skip the baseball cap, it makes you look immature. Instead, if you want to wear a hat, maybe consider a flat cap in the fall winter season. As layering is very important in your age group, I suggest you go with sweaters because they keep you warm in the winter, they add a little book to your build which easily comes off as muscles, and they keep you warm If you are up for a cardigan, you can even take it off if it's too hot and that makes it very flexible, casual but well-dressed. MID 20S If you’re in a sales position or if you're in a white-collar profession, you will definitely need a lot more suits than one. If you're not, I suggest to invest more in combinations. Maybe of a blazer would be a great first garment to start and overall, I suggest you check out our guide on the 10 clothing items that every man should have because that's the foundation of your wardrobe that will last you a lifetime and you'll get a lot of wear out of it because it's very versatile and flexible. The mid-20s or mid or late thirties A great wardrobe staple is probably Oxford shirt, especially with a button-down collar. It's something that you can still wear either casually or combined with a jacket or suit. Polo shirts are nice if you maybe want to play golf or hang out with your children on the weekend but they're not something you should wear to the office, not even on casual Fridays. The mid-40s to about 65 Instead of using bolder colors to differentiate your outfit, I suggest to go with different textures and especially subtle patterns. You can go with window panes instead of solids, herringbones not just finer but bigger, maybe a classic Prince of Wales check that is larger in black and white that goes well with your gray hair. These are all things that can really help you develop an outfit that is very age appropriate yet very stylish. 65 and up If you're 65 and up, you're likely retired or you're looking forward to retirement. You either spend your days on a golf course or hang out with friends playing cards, working at the woodshop, and at that stage of your life, the degree of formality goes down. Man Builds Off Grid Log Cabin Alone in the Canadian Wilderness

One man builds a cheap, rustic log cabin in the Canadian wilderness alone and without power tools over several months in 2017. Finally, one video showing the entire build process from the cutting of the first tree to the laying of the last floor board - no food, no talking, no visitors, just carpentry, bushcraft, timber framing, blood, sweat and tears. My end goal is to have an off grid, primitive wilderness homestead, where I can practice primitive technology, bushcraft and traditional skills in an effort to become as completely self reliant as possible in this day and age. In late April, I cut the first balsam fir tree down on the property near Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. Next, from June until August, I collected all of the building materials and fabricated the cabin using saddle notches in the corners. I cleared the land in August, laid down gravel for a pad and began erecting the off grid log cabin. By September, the walls were done and I started on the roof framing in October. In November, I burned the roof boards with shou sugi ban, an ancient Japanese technique for preserving wood. Against convention, I installed the roof in board and batten fashion, using my roofing background to come up with techniques to keep the cabin watertight. Next, I moved inside where I installed a Vermont Castings wood stove on top of a limestone flagstone floor, which extended from the doorway to the center of the cabin underneath the fireplace. For the rest of the floor, I framed it using 2x4 and 2x6 red pine boards and then installed 2x6x10' boards, which I burned using the same shou sugi ban technique. Now in December, I chinked the walls with moss and clay and have been spending a lot of time in the cabin, starting rustic furniture made with materials from the surrounding forest. It sounds a little like a blend between American English and a form of British English. So what is this cadence, exactly? This type of pronunciation is called the Transatlantic, or Mid-Atlantic, accent. And it isn’t like most other accents – instead of naturally evolving, the Transatlantic accent was acquired. This means that people in the United States were taught to speak in this voice. Historically Transatlantic speech was the hallmark of aristocratic America and theatre. In upper-class boarding schools across New England, students learned the Transatlantic accent as an international norm for communication, similar to the way posh British society used Received Pronunciation – essentially, the way the Queen and aristocrats are taught to speak. It has several quasi-British elements, such a lack of rhoticity. This means that Mid-Atlantic speakers dropped their “r’s” at the end of words like “winner” or “clear”. They’ll also use softer, British vowels – “dahnce” instead of “dance”, for instance. Another thing that stands out is the emphasis on clipped, sharp t’s. In American English we often pronounce the “t” in words like “writer” and “water” as d’s. Transatlantic speakers will hit that T like it stole something. “Writer.” “Water.” But, again, this speech pattern isn’t completely British, nor completely American. Instead, it’s a form of English that’s hard to place… and that’s part of why Hollywood loved it. There’s also a theory that technological constraints helped Mid-Atlantic’s popularity. According to Professor Jay O’Berski, this nasally, clipped pronunciation is a vestige from the early days of radio. Receivers had very little bass technology at the time, and it was very difficult – if not impossible – to hear bass tones on your home device. Now we live in an age where bass technology is booms from the trunks of cars across America. So what happened to this accent? Linguist William Labov notes that Mid-Atlantic speech fell out of favor after World War II, as fewer teachers continued teaching the pronunciation to their students. That’s one of the reasons this speech sounds so ‘old-timey’ to us today: when people learn it, they’re usually learning it for acting purposes, rather than for everyday use. However, we can still hear the effects of Mid-Atlantic speech in recordings of everyone from Katherine Hepburn to Franklin D. Roosevelt and, of course, countless films, newsreels and radio shows from the 30s and 40s.
