Sherlock Holmes - Death In The North Sea (June 6, 1947)

29:23
Sherlock Holmes was an old-time radio show which aired in the USA from October 2, 1939 to July 7, 1947. Most episodes were written by the team of Dennis Green and Anthony Boucher. Originally, the show starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson. Together, they starred in 220 episodes which aired weekly on Mondays from 8:30 to 9:00pm. Bromo Quinine sponsored some of the earlier programs on the NBC Blue Network and for a period Parker Pen was the sponsor. The show first aired on the Blue Network but later moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System. It was originally broadcast from Hollywood. During World War II, the show was also broadcast overseas through the Armed Forces Radio Service. It is unknown exactly how many of the original 220 shows have survived, 53 are currently known to be in circulation. Basil Rathbone's last episode as the famous Detective was "The Singular Affair of the Baconian Cipher." He was eager to separate himself from the show to avoid being typecast as Sherlock Holmes, and even though the show's sponsor Petri Wine offered him generous pay to continue, he decided to move on. Once he did, the sponsor did as well, and Tom Conway took the starring role, though Nigel Bruce got top billing and was always announced first. The new sponsor was Kreml Hair Tonic for Men, and the new series lasted only 39 episodes. Bruce and Conway then left the series. From then until 1950 the series continued as "Sherlock Holmes" with various actors playing the two principle parts. With Rathbone and Bruce, the show exhibited an interesting introduction. The sponsor's spokesman, usually Knox Manning or Harry Bartell, or, during the show's initial season and again in the final season, Joseph Bell, would show up weekly at Dr. Watson's house (then retired and living in California), and share a story about Holmes and his adventures over a glass of Petri wine. This offered them the chance to sometimes bring in other characters to contribute to the story, and also gave Watson a chance to summarize or add additional titbits at the end. Another interesting thing about this radio show's introductions was Dr. Watson's anecdotes and comments about his dogs usually referred to as the "Puppies." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anita O'Day And Her Trio • 18-07-1982 • World of Jazz

31:07
Exclusive live performance of this elusive American jazzsinger Anita O'Day and her trio at the North Sea Jazz Festival, The Hague, The Netherlands, 18 July 1982. Anita O'Day (born Anita Belle Colton; October 18, 1919 – November 23, 2006) was an American jazz singer widely admired for her sense of rhythm and dynamics, and her early big band appearances that shattered the traditional image of the "girl singer". Refusing to pander to any female stereotype, O'Day presented herself as a "hip" jazz musician, wearing a band jacket and skirt as opposed to an evening gown. She changed her surname from Colton to O'Day, pig Latin for "dough", slang for money Along with Mel Tormé Anita O'Day is often grouped with the West Coast school of jazz. See also Mel Tormé's performance elsewhere on World of Jazz. Anita O'Day sings: Wave (Antonio Carlos Jobim) You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To (Cole Porter) In A Mellow Tone (Duke Ellington) A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square (Eric Maschwitz, Manning Sherwin) They Can't Take That Away From Me ((Ira & George Gershwin) Honeysuckle Rose (Fats Waller, Andy Razaf) Wave (Reprise) (Antonio Carlos Jobim) Watch more World of Jazz videos ► https://goo.gl/Z28cxv Join us. Felixstowe Holiday 1966

15:50
Felixstowe is an Edwardian seaside town and civil parish between the River Orwell and River Deben on the North Sea coast of Suffolk, England. The 2011 Census recorded the parish population as 23,689.[ It includes the Port of Felixstowe, which is the largest container port in the United Kingdom. The nearby small town of Walton is often viewed as an extension of Felixstowe as the two towns are virtually side by side, though Walton was the original village. The quieter area nearer to the Deben River is often referred to as Old Felixstowe, although there is no formal classification of Old Felixstowe.

The Live #Ghost - #Laurel & #Hardy

20:37
A gruff sea captain, who absolutely detests the word "ghost," is having trouble manning his ship because of the rumor it's...well...haunted. He inveigles Stanley and Oliver into helping him shanghai a crew from the sailors at a dockside bar. The comic duo accomplish this by using one of the funniest devices ever put into a movie, and of course it all goes wrong. Once aboard, the captain warns them that whoever says the word "ghost" will get his head twisted from north to south. After much time at sea and many port stops later, one of the drunken sailors falls into a trough of whitewash, terrorizing Stanley and Oliver into blurting out "ghost" in front of the enraged captain, which brings about the story's Laurel and Hardy trademark "another fine mess" ending. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0025413/plotsummary?ref_=tt_ov_pl

OF SHIPS AND THE SEA

03:08
Built at Dunston's Yard near Hull, a new schooner called "Sir Winston Churchill". The schooner is the first ship of its kind ever paid for by public subscription. She's also the first three masted vessel ever built in this country for youth training. ® The Royal Navy's Junior Shore Training Establishment, near Ipswich, celebrates its sixtieth anniversary. A highlight of the ceremonies was the Manning the Mast, watched by Admiral Sir Charles Madden, Commander-in-Chief Home Fleet. ® Alfred Burgess has spent over twenty years trying to overcome some of the basic drawbacks of the conventional ships' hull. Pictures show a twenty foot model, which is the result of his research. Twin screws are mounted at the front between the three hulls, and they pull rather than push. Also there is no bow wave and no wake, and steering is achieved by the engines alone. We got hired by Warner Brothers to produce this little ditty to be utilized in the cult hit film, Empire Records (see inter cut version). This is the full length version never really before seen since it comes from my vaults... enjoy.

Simon Winchester at TEDxEast

20:46
Simon Winchester, best-selling author, journalist, and broadcaster, has worked as a foreign correspondent for most of his career and lectures widely at universities, geological and historical societies, and libraries. His current book is the New York Times best-seller The Man Who Loved China: The Fantastic Story of the Eccentric Scientist Who Unlocked the Mysteries of the Middle Kingdom, the remarkable story of Joseph Needham, the eccentric and adventurous scientist who fell in love with China and whose own work there unveils the epic story of that magisterial country. The author of 21 books, including the best-sellers The Professor and the Madman, an account of the men behind the Oxford English Dictionary, A Crack in the Edge of the World: America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906, and The Map that Changed the World, about the nineteenth century geologist William Smith, Winchester specializes in eccentric, obsessive geniuses. He is praised for his skills as a masterful and riveting storyteller both on the page and in lectures. Winchester's journalistic work, mainly for The Guardian and the Sunday Times, has landed him in Belfast, Washington, DC, New Delhi, New York, London, and Hong Kong, where he covered such stories as the Ulster crisis, the creation of Bangladesh, the fall of President Marcos, the Watergate affair, the Jonestown Massacre, the assassination of Egypt's President Sadat, the recent death and cremation of Pol Pot, and, in 1982, the Falklands War. During this conflict he was arrested and spent three months in prison in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego on spying charges. Winchester writes and presents television films on a variety of historical topics and is a frequent contributor to BBC radio. Yet, the self-described "traditionalist who loves fine paper and ink" has written his first book entirely for a digital medium, an interactive app for the iPad called Skulls, published by Touch Press and available on the App Store. "The app is a wonderful way of exploring the skull in human culture and as a symbol," Winchester says. Although he graduated from Oxford in 1966 with a degree in geology, Winchester only spent a year working as a geologist in the Ruwenzori Mountains in western Uganda and on oil rigs in the North Sea, before joining his first newspaper in 1967. He now works principally as an author, although he contributes to a number of American and British magazines and journals, including Harper's, The Smithsonian, National Geographic Magazine,The Spectator, Granta, theNew York Times, and The Atlantic Monthly. He was appointed Asia-Pacific Editor of Conde Nast Traveler at its inception in 1987, later becoming Editor-at-Large. His writings have won him several awards including Britain's Journalist of the Year. He writes and presents television films, including a series on the final colonial years of Hong Kong and on a variety of other historical topics, and is a frequent contributor to the BBC radio program, From Our Own Correspondent. Winchester is a fellow at London's Royal Geological Society. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) 'for services to journalism and literature' in the New Year Honours list for 2006. He was elected an Honorary Fellow of St. Catherine's College, Oxford, in October 2009. Simon Winchester, who is married to the former NPR producer Setsuko Sato, lives in New York and on a small farm in the Berkshires. His interests include letterpress printing, bee-keeping, astronomy, stamp-collecting, model railways and cider-making

The ferocious predatory dinosaurs of Cretaceous Sahara - Nizar Ibrahim

04:20
View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/the-ferocious-predatory-dinosaurs-of-cretaceous-sahara-nizar-ibrahim In Cretaceous times (around 100 million years ago), North Africa was home to a huge river system and a bizarre menagerie of giant prehistoric predators -- including the Spinosaurus, a dinosaur even more fearsome than the Tyrannosaurus rex. Nizar Ibrahim uses paleontological and geological data to reconstruct this “River of Giants” in surprising detail. Lesson by Nizar Ibrahim, animation by Silvia Prietov.

Call of the Sea - Demo track - Shad Manning

05:44
Hey all! here is the first demo track for my fundraising campaign album Songs of the Sea, and the first track to be in sequence of the album, Call of the Sea. For those who do not know what this fundraising campaign is (which is probably most of you) I am putting together Go Fund Me, Patreon, and maybe a Kickstarter in order to raise the funding I need to purchase better sample libraries, such as EaseWest Hollywood Orchestra, Best Service Forest Kingdom, Mystica and Cantus, and Shevannai, and some other programs from Native Instruments, Soundiron, Spitfire, etc. I have a lot of really cool ideas for new music, most of which I cannot do without these. What Songs of the Sea is, is a 100% free album of 75+ minutes of music that I will compose (or recompose, in this one's case!) using the new libraries. I plan on having 3 to 5 demo tracks out before this campaign begins, to demonstrate what the album will sound like. But for right now, ease back and let your mind slip into a far away land on the edge of the water, and listen for the Call of the Sea.
