http://storyblocks.com/Cinecom - Almost any Canon, Nikon, Lumix or other DSLR camera can change their picture style or photo profile. But what's the best setting? The picture style of your camera mainly controls the contrast and saturation of your recorded video. Those settings are baked into your shot, meaning you can't change it afterwards. Therefore it's very important to know what you're doing and which photo style you'd need to select. DYNAMIC RANGE Like shown in the tutorial video, we would like to get a flat image. This means, low contrast a medium saturation. What we're actually trying to accomplish is a better dynamic range. The higher the dynamic range, the more stops of light variables we can capture. For example: if you're filming underneath a tree, your subject might be very dark and the background very bright. When having a low dynamic range (when filming in something like the Vivid picture style), you'll notice that the sky is over exposed and your subject under exposed. You might even lose details in those areas which can never be recovered again. FLAT PICTURE STYLE You can create a good flat picture style from the camera's neutral setting by dialing into the sub-settings. If your camera allows it, you can take it even a step further by going log. Log profiles are camera specific as they utilize the sensor the best, taking out the maximum possible dynamic range. Panasonic has their V-log, Sony cameras use slog2 or slog3 and Canon have their famous C-log. Sometimes you get these profiles when you get your DSLR camera, but often your need to install or even purchase it later like the Panasonic V-Log. However, these super flat picture styles come with a downside. As shown in the tutorial video, it pushes your shadows adding much more noise into it. When having much shadows, such as in low light conditions, this noise ads up. That's why flat profiles work better in daylight or brighter environments. In low light conditions, we tend to go for a semi-flat style, such as the neutral picture style. In four minutes, I show you how to take a detailed photo of the moon. I use a Canon T2i but the principles will also apply to other Digital SLR cameras, providing you have manual controls. In the video, I forgot to mention shutter speed. Here are some suggestions depending on what ISO and aperture you're using: ISO100, ƒ11: 1/100. ISO100, ƒ8: 1/200. ISO100, ƒ5.6: 1/400. ISO200, ƒ16: 1/100. ISO200, ƒ11: 1/200. ISO200, ƒ8: 1/400. ISO200, ƒ5.6: 1/800. ISO400, ƒ16: 1/200. ISO400, ƒ11: 1/400. ISO400, ƒ8: 1/800. ISO400, ƒ5.6: 1/1600. Here is the text: So it's the middle of the night and I feel like taking a picture, but what can I take a photo of? Ah, now there's a shining example of a photo that everyone wants to take... a picture of the moon. But probably not with this point-and-shoot. Let's use a proper camera. Here's my T2i, and I've fitted my 'kit' telephoto lens and set it on a tripod. Let's go and see what this can do. We'll choose auto (that's the green one) and take it outside and see what it's capable of. OK, we'll turn it on, line it up with the moon, zoom in, and get some definition in the focus area, focus, and... Oh. That didn't look very good, let's see what we got. Well, that was awful. It's true. As I make this in 2012, auto simply isn't going to work. Because most of the screen is black, it's going to boost the brightness of the moon until you can't see its features because it's blown out. Right, enough joking, now let's do it properly. The first thing is to set up a picture style with maximum sharpness. Menu button, two-spot camera page, right at the bottom. User defined 1, press the DISP button to set the detail, sharpness, all the way up to 7. Now we'll turn the dial to Manual. Select picture style, and choose user defined 1. Make sure your lens is set to have focus on Manual, and the Image Stabilisation off. Turn the aperture to whatever f-stop you think is the sweet-spot for your lens, it's probably going to be somewhere between a stop away from wide open and F-11. It also helps to use a remote control so that you don't have to touch the camera. This is an RC-6 infra-red remote control. I'll set the camera to receive infra-red signals, you don't need to do this if you use a wired one. You could also use the timer if you don't possess the remote. Line the camera up so that the moon is in the centre of the screen, and use the maginfy button (a plus sign in a blue magnifying glass) to get the 5x digital zoom for manual focusing. I'll be honest, doing a manual focus is hard, because it's very sensitive. Do your best, and take your shot. After all this setting up, it's well worth refocusing multiple times, and taking five or ten attempts or more. When you get back to the computer, sort the images by size. The one that has the largest JPEG will be the one that's in best focus because it contains the most detail. We can ignore that first one we took, that was a joke; the best one is the next largest right here. To be honest, this isn't the best moon shot I've taken because it's a little hazy tonight, but as far as I can tell, these tips will get you the best shot your camera is capable of.

This is a tutorial of how to use the free picture style editor that comes with every EOS Canon camera. I show how to install it, where to get it, and how to use it along with some examples of how it looks and what you can do with it. Things to keep in mind when using this setting: 1. I haven't found a way to make these changes in Auto mode, so it may be possible, but I could only use this in manual mode. 2. These setting will be much harder to adjust/correct in post processing when shooting video vs photo with a jpeg+ RAW file. The Raw file will be unchanged and none of these settings will be applied. So if you take a bunch of pictures you don't like, you'll have the RAW file if you set the capture mode to include the RAW. ===================================================== This is a video of how to install the EOS software: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUpTDIX9gLo ===================================================== This is the link to Canon to get the free software. In this video I explain how to set exposure correctly on a Canon EOS DSLR while using the Prolost Flat picture style. You can find more details about the Prolost Flat picture style here: http://prolost.com/flat ____ To start, in your camera settings, navigate to your picture styles, and go to User Defined 1. From there, hit info to set the details and set the picture style to Neutral. Once on Neutral, set the Sharpness all the way to the left so that it is at 0. Do the same for contrast. Dial the saturation two clicks to the left and put color tone on 0. While you're in the menus, set your color space to sRGB. It doesn't make sense to use any other color space since the video being recorded is Rec.709, which is even less colors than sRGB. Also, change your Histogram display to Brightness instead of RGB. ____ Now that that's done, lets start with how to figure out what your exposure is. When you have your Canon DSLR camera in video mode (or live view mode) push the "Info." button until the brightness histogram is displayed on the screen. Look at it closely. You should see that it is broken up into 5 zones with a vertical line separating each zone. The zone on the far left is blacks, the zone on the far right is whites, and when looking at a Luminance waveform in Adobe Premiere Pro (or your editor of choice), this Brightness histogram directly corresponds to the IRE levels you would see in a waveform display, so something all the way over to the left is IRE 0, and something all the way over to the right is IRE 100. The camera's histogram divides it up into nice 20 IRE chunks for our ease of use. The very middle of the middle zone is IRE 50. Canon DSLRs shoot full swing video and not studio swing (Google those terms if you don't know what that is), so what you see in the Brightness histogram is literally IRE 0-100. Pretty nifty to know, and very easy to verify. Just shoot some footage, make note of where it is on the Histogram on the camera, and then look to see where it is on the waveform display in the editor. The histogram is not perfect, but it is waaaay better than nothing, or even worse, trying to set exposure using the display on the back of the camera. Not a good way to go. Use the Brightness histogram. It's the fastest way to get consistent exposure from shot to shot. ____ So now that we know how to tell what our exposure is, when we're using Prolost Flat, how do we set our exposure correctly? Well, you need a couple more tools, but don't worry, they're very in-expensive. Ideally (and the best case scenario) is you would have an 18% grey card. I use Mennon 18% grey cards, but really, any card will do as long as it an 18% grey card. If you don't have that, you can also use a normal sheet of white copy paper. Either one will work. So, to set your exposure, you set your lights up the way you like, and then you place the grey card (or white sheet of paper) where your skin tones would be (or human faces) and have it directly facing the camera. If your shot doesn't have people in it, then place it where it will be lit by the primary source of light in your scene. From there change the exposure controls (ISO, shutter speed, aperture) on your camera (or add/remove light) so that the grey card or white sheet of paper sits in the right spot on the histogram. It's that simple. So what is the right spot on the Histogram? This is the money part: The 18% grey card should sit as close to 40 IRE as possible. It should cause a spike on the histogram right on the line separating the 20-40 IRE zone and the 40-60 IRE zone. The white sheet of paper should cause a spike at 70 IRE, which is right smack in the middle of the 60-80 IRE zone. Remember, this is reflected flat white and not specular highlights or light sources which are brighter than white, so a basic reflected white should be 70 IRE straight out of the camera when using Prolost Flat. White is a funny thing, which is why I recommend actually using a grey card over a white card. It's a lot easier to get consistent exposure with a grey card. That is it. That is how you set exposure on your Canon EOS DSLR Camera using the Prolost Flat picture style. It really is that easy. It will give you a fairly usable image straight out of the camera that will be really easy to grade and go from pretty usable to looking really great with a little color grading, and you can get the same look and cut footage from multiple Canon DSLR cameras super easy this way.

http://www.dslrfilmnoob.com/ Sorry for the delay in video production over the last week or so. I've been in a motel for two and half weeks off and on. In fact this video is shot in two different motel rooms, facial hair changes from shot to shot. Any how after covering the flat picture styles last week a number of you asked for a guide on how to install a flat picture style on to your canon DSLR. First find the disk that's included with your camera, and install the EOS utility software included on the disk. Once you've done that just download the picture style you like. You can find links to all of the picture styles here: http://www.dslrfilmnoob.com/2011/04/30/film-look-technicolor-cinestyle-v-s-marvels-cine-picture-style/ Then copy the steps included in this video to install the flat picture style on your camera. http://www.learningdslrvideo.com/import-picture-style/ A lot of people have been asking how to import some of these custom picture styles I have been playing with lately. It is really easy, but I thought I would create a quick video on it. At the end of the video I test out a new picture style by Alex Mack called the Digital Cinema Lite. From what I can tell it sits between the Crooked Path Flat and the Marvel LOWc in terms of contrast. I have my picture styles order this way because from standard as you jog the well from Standard to 3,2,1 it becomes less and less contrasty so I can find the correct picture style quick depending on the lighting situation.

The CINEMA Picture Style is Cinema Out Of The Box Get the new CINEMA Picture Style here: http://www.cineplus.ch/cinema.html This test features a non color graded sequence, followed by the same sequence, with color correction. The CINEMA PS, doesn't NEED CC, but LIKES it. Lights: -rim light: Lupo -key light: a reflector -ambient light: available lights in the room. As the CINEMA Picture Style doesn't need any LUT or adjustments, you can save days of color correction by starting with a gorgeous look. If you want more, or you want your own look, you can color correct it and achieve great results. Flat styles use only the mid portion of the RGB gamma, losing data all the way. This is NOT RAW. Don't fool yourself mimicking RAW users. It's another world,.. that needs tons of CC days and data storage, and huge budgets. A review by Philip Bloom http://philipbloom.net/2011/09/18/canon-dslrs-my-favorite-picture-profiles/ FIRST TEST HERE: http://vimeo.com/28550676 Vimeo CINEMA Picture Style Group http://vimeo.com/groups/106463/videos Instructions on how to upload the CINEMA Picture Style on the Canon camera via EOS Utility http://www.canon.co.jp/imaging/picturestyle/file/eos-utility.html Features: - Best perceived latitude ever on a 5d, but with a nice contrasty image Explanation: Latitude won't change with any picture style, what changes is that LCD tv' s render everything above RGB 236 as white or anyway too bright to not consider it white. So the "best latitude ever" is meant for the final user who will enjoy all highlights details because this preset shifts all those details in a lower, visible range. But the curve is made to lower the highlights and boosting the area just below making the image contrasty even if whites are not whites. - Keeps details on shadows and highlights while remaining quite contrasted. - Vivid colors on low saturated areas, no greysh or monochromatic cast. - Analog like colors on high saturated areas. - Very sharp image. - Film colorimetry. - Doesn't need color grading. - Best usage of the 8 bit codec. The new CINEMA Picture Style was developed analyzing and replicating a film stock colorimetry, and combined with a digital look and feel of high end digital cameras. Lenses: Nikkor AIS 35mm, 85mm, Praktica 58mm Get it now here: http://www.cineplus.ch/cinema.html

Subscribe for weekly "real world" tips https://www.youtube.com/user/moosewinans?sub_confirmation=1 See me and my family's antics on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/moosewinans and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MooseWinans/ Ever look at your photos and wish you could tweak the colors, contrast and sharpness with little to no effort? Today I want to share with you a little known feature that makes it easy to apply "filters" in-camera to get a creative look. Whether you prefer vivid colors, softer pastel hues or black and white, Picture Controls (Nikon) and Picture Styles (Canon) give you the ability to "edit" your images beforehand and without an extra step. A couple things to keep in mind... 1) Picture Controls/Styles are applied to JPEG images, so the image quality has to be set to either JPEG or RAW+JPEG. 2) Once a JPEG photo has been taken with a certain Picture Control/Style, you can't go back and reverse it to something else. So if you shoot a JPEG photo in black and white, it will be black and white forever. I recommend shooting in RAW+JPEG, that way you have a RAW image that retains the color in case you want to reverse it later on. If you've played with Picture Controls/Styles recently, I'd love to see them. You can post your photos here: https://www.facebook.com/MooseWinans/... Thanks again to each of you who respond each week with a like or comment, it really does mean the world to me. Happy shooting!

http://www.fordeetv.com Video Tutorials For Beginners-Advanced Using Canon Cameras In this video I demonstrate how to load a custom picture style into your Canon DSLR. I'm using a Canon 7D, but this technique will work with other Canon EOS DSLR's. You must have the Canon EOS Utility installed and updated if not already. You must also have a picture style you want to load... for the tutorial I used Technicolor's Cinestyle. Cinestyle is a flat picture style allowing you to shoot footage with greater detail in both the highlights and shadows... however their picture style is designed to be color corrected in post production. If you do not plan to color correct in post, you will want to use another picture style. Topics covered include: Launching Canon EOS Utility Loading Custom Picture Styles Saving Picture Styles via Custom Camera Settings I plan to do more of these Camera Quick Tip videos going forward. As always, feedback and sharing the video with friends is appreciated!
