MACNA 2013: Reef Savvy Aquariums - BRStv Product Spotlight

08:52
http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/ We've talked a lot about technology at MACNA 2013, but in this episode of BRStv we are going to talk about craftsmanship. Felix from Reef Savvy Aquarium Design and Fabrication joined us to discuss his rimless aquariums and custom aquarium cabinets. We quickly learned that the difference for the Reef Savvy tanks is all in the details. Everything they do is made for the marine environment -- double laminated cabinetry, marine grade stainless steel hinges, sumps from Synergy that have the same standards as Reef Savvy. They make the under the tank as nice as the tank itself. Top to bottom -- quality and details. Oh and they'll make you a custom tank and cabinet AND they'll make it marine grade. So what did we see? Felix first showed us a custom tank for a client with dimensions of 96" x 36" x 20." -- approximately 300 gallons. This was an all rimless tank with ¾" glass construction and the "double phantom bottom." The phantom bottom is "out of sight and out of mind" - you barely see it and it appears to be floating. It is triple laminated - made from ¾" glass laminated with vinyl and second layer of ¾" of glass and ¼" PVC. No need to use foam and you can keep that modern rimless look. This look is not only aesthetically pleasing but it adds integrity and strength to the aquarium. Reef Savvy also unveiled their new Ghost Overflow. The Ghost Overflow -- "you don't hear it and you don't see it." 4000 gallons per hour and silent. On the inside of the tank is a 1.4" thick box with magnetically coupled rear cover help on with Neodymium magnets. Easily remove for cleaning and place back in place. On the outside is the full box - full siphon configuration with multiple redundancies and built-in fail-safe. Sharp and such a low profile in the tank -- looks great! Thanks Reef Savvy! *Legal Stuff* The purpose and content of this video is to provide general information regarding the products and their applications as presented in the video. Will Red Sea Reef Energy Help Corals Grow? BRStv Product Spotlight

07:10
http://brs.li/reefenergy Today on BRStv we have a product spotlight on Red Sea Reef Energy which is part of the Red Sea Reef Care Program. So the first question to ask is -- do you really need to feed corals? The simple answer is no. There are many successful reef tanks out there that do not feed their corals. However, reefing is about find what is best for your tank and implementing that into your saltwater aquarium. This is why coral nutritional additives are produces by so many reefing manufacturers. Generally most reef hobbyists look for tissue and polyp health and changes in coloration. But the biggest sign of health is growth. Growth in and of itself is a really good indicator of health. And generally speaking most living organisms use energy in the following manor, first for metabolic function and tissue repair, second for growth and third reproduction. So Red Sea Reef Energy - what is it? Simply put, it is a two part system -- Reef Energy A and Reef Energy B. Reef Energy A is the necessary carbohydrates that make is easier for your corals to absorb the nutrients and amino acids in Reef Energy B. Red Sea does a really good job breaking down what can seem like a pretty complicated process. Red Sea research has led them to conclude that most corals get 85% of their nutrition from their symbiotic algae. The other 15% must come from another source and so Red Sea set out to provide these essential elements to maximize growth, coloration and health. Red Sea Reef Energy Part A is comprised mainly of carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids and suspended protein flocks. All of which are necessary for metabolic functions like protein production and soft tissue regeneration. Red Sea Part B is comprised of a concentrated solution of vitamins and marine amino acids which Red Sea found were important parts of coral nutrition and limiting factors. They also found the included vitamins are an important precursor to the proper formation of proteins. All of these elements found in this product are marine-based. Dosing these products is easy. Just a few milliliters per 25 gallons of water dosed every day. Have you tried Red Sea Reef Energy? *Legal Stuff* The purpose and content of this video is to provide general information regarding the products and their applications as presented in the video. Using Filter Socks in Your Reef Tank - EP 4: Saltwater Aquarium Maintenance

04:15
http://brs.li/filtersocks Filter socks are often used in saltwater tanks to keep the water column free of particles so your water looks crystal clear. If you change and clean your filter socks regularly, they can be a component of your nutrient export maintenance cycle. Most reefers use the felt filter sock on the output of their overflow pipes so the water leaving the tank has to pass through. The felt-like filter material will catch food, fish poop and particulate matter. This will stop the material from being recirculated back into the tank. If you are diligent about swapping these out, you can avoid the release of nitrate and phosphate that is made from the organic matter in the filter sock. Filter socks come in mesh or felt and with draw strings or plastic rings. Vertex and CPR Aquatics make holders for the plastic ring filter socks. The mesh filter socks are more commonly used for media filtration like carbon and GFO. However, the mesh can be used to capture large particles like whole fish food pellets or shrimp. So how do you use filter socks? Tell us about it in the comments below. *Legal Stuff* The purpose and content of this video is to provide general information regarding the products and their applications as presented in the video. Dosing Lanthanum chloride to lower phosphate in a reef aquarium

I've used some version of this chemical for over 14 years in my aquariums instead of GFO. MACNA 2013: Red Sea Reef Care Program - BRStv Product Spotlight

05:10
http://brs.li/redseareefcare With all the cool technology we found at MACNA 2013, it was also great to talk to the folks at Red Sea and focus on the core of caring for reef tanks. The Reef Care program is a series of test kits and aquarium supplements developed to help you achieve the tank you want. Whether you are seeking more coloration or more growth, Red Sea allows you to customize your system of dosing and supplementation. At the core is the Reef Foundation A, B, C system which is calcium, alkalinity and magnesium supplements - available in both liquid or powder. Once established, you can begin additional dosing for colors and growth. Through research Red Sea has come up with a predictable ratio for the elements that is based on calcium uptake. Once you know the level at which your system takes up calcium you can easily dose the other elements accordingly. Then try the Red Sea Colors to enhance your pinks, reds, greens and blues/purples. Red Sea Reef Energy is a two part system whereby Reef Energy A is the simple carbohydrates which help open the pores of the coral so they can more easily digest the amino acids of Reef Energy B. We really like how Red Sea has simplified what can seem like a complicated process. Thanks Red Sea. *Legal Stuff* The purpose and content of this video is to provide general information regarding the products and their applications as presented in the video. ADD AMAZING COLOR TO YOUR TANK WITH INSTANT REEF ARTIFICIAL CORAL (PRODUCT REVIEW)

SUBSCRIBE to Steven Housden's YouTube Channel for free upgrade videos, reviews, how-to's & giveaways: http://www.youtube.com/user/dpstudios?sub_confirmation=1 PLEASE COMMENT, LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE...IT HELPS ME KEEP THIS CHANNEL GOING FOR YOU GUYS AND I REALLY APPRECIATE IT! Check out amazons selection of Instant Reef Products Here https://www.amazon.com/s?marketplaceID=ATVPDKIKX0DER&me=A3NT9IGMI7560Y&merchant=A3NT9IGMI7560Y&redirect=true I purchased this 3 piece set directly from Instant Reef. After I received them I followed all of the directions included and everything is awesome. We soaked ours in the tub for a couple of hours as we were putting these in an already established 55 gallon tank. I was curious if it was going to cloud the water but it never did. I did 2 soaks of about 2 hours each and then rinsed them really good. Everything looked good so I put them in. I already had a few artificial corals from Nature's Image and Deep Blue Professional so I did use those to fill in around these pieces from instant Reef. Although I did not need to..I just had them so I used them. I purchased a 3 foot package for a 4 foot ( standard 55 gallon) tank. That worked out great as to have room around the edges of the corals and the tank. I have provided a video review so you can actually see the pieces in our tank. The colors really pop. I can sit for hours just watching the fish now...very relaxing. The shipping was fast and it was packed really good. Everything was in one piece as it should be.

T5HO Fluorescent: Proven Lighting For Your Reef Aquarium

03:05
If you are looking for an economical and proven way to light your reef tank, a T5 lighting system is a great option. Not only does it offer the lowest up-front cost of all lighting systems, it is also what many SPS gurus rely on to grow out and color up Acroporas and many other stony corals. While not as efficient as LED lighting in terms of operating costs, T5 lighting does have some great benefits. Since the dawn of reef keeping, we have been using fluorescent lights to grow all types of corals. The color options and UV spectrums promote growth and really bring out the color in your corals. With all of the different bulbs available, it is easy to manipulate the color in your aquarium by simply changing out a bulb. Because of the shape of the lamps and the way light is spread, T5 lighting illuminates your tank evenly resulting in minimal shadows and brilliant color. If not the sole source of lighting, T5 lights can also be a great supplemental light. For years we have used fluorescent lights to supplement metal halide lights. With the recent boom in LED lights, we are starting to see a trend in using T5 and LED’s together which is proving to be a great way to overcome some of the pitfalls of LED lights such as shadowing, loss of color, and uneven light spread. We installed the AquaticLife 4 Lamp T5HO Light Fixture on our office aquarium. This is one of our most popular and best selling light fixtures. My favorite feature is the built in timer which allows you the achieve the dawn/dusk effect, custom time schedules and it means it only has one power cord. It comes with a full set of AquaticLife T5 lamps, German-made reflectors to maximize the light directed to your aquarium and includes mounting legs which allows you to easily place the fixture on the top of your aquarium. The bulb combination you see at 1:56 in the video is the AquaticLife lamps that come standard with the T5 fixture. We also carry a wide selection of other popular brand name T5 lamps including ATI, Geisemann, Red Sea, and UVL. We also installed some ATI bulbs you can see at 2:06 in the video just to give you an idea of how you can achieve different lighting spectrums by changing up the bulbs. When choosing a combination of bulbs for your aquarium, the options are almost endless. This is pretty awesome because you can tailor the color in your tank to your liking. With all of the options, it can be a little confusing when shopping for bulbs so we came up with this helpful chart to make choosing the right lamps a little easier. You can always give our customer service team a call as well as we love hearing from our customers and are happy to help you get the right lamps for your tank. In summary, don’t let the allure of LED lights completely steer you away from this proven method of lighting a reef tank. If you have questions or need help, we are always available to give you a hand. Please don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel in order to get the latest reef hobby and product news. Marineland Reef Capable LED Light Fixture w/ Integrated Light Timer Product Demo

02:45
The Marineland Reef Capable LED Light System w/ Integrated Light Timer provides the right intensity and spectral output to care for many types of reef aquarium inhabitants. The high quality 1-watt LEDs produce a natural-looking light with metal halide-like shimmer effects, adding depth and dimension to your aquarium. You can run the white LEDs for daylight and the blue LEDs for lunar light or both at the same time if you'd like to highlight the colorful corals in your tank. The fixture itself is smaller and sleeker than most LED fixtures currently on the market, which make it an attractive choice if you're looking for a light that doesn't draw a lot of attention to itself and instead puts the focus on your underwater habitat. In this video, we'll demonstrate how to set the integrated light timer on the fixture. The convenient and customizable timer controls precisely when the 460nm blue and 10,000K white LEDs turn on and off. You can design your own timed sequence to give your tank the right light at the right time. Marineland added new dispersion lenses over the blue LEDs to provide a better mix of light in your tank. The energy-efficient LEDs don't require regular bulb replacement, like fluorescent and metal halide light fixtures, which will save you a bundle year after year. Marineland estimates the LEDs will last 50,000 hours. Easily adjustable support legs allow you to adjust the light to fit over a variety of aquarium lengths, so you'll be able transfer the light to a larger tank should you decide to upgrade down the road. Week 15: Adding saltwater fish intelligently and safely | 52 Weeks of Reefing #BRS160

14:01
http://brs.li/BRS160__Week15 Welcome to Week 15 of 52 Weeks of Reefing! This week we are going to talk fish; not just how to select your first fish but how to build an entire "fish plan". We'll cover quarantining options, acclimation methods, an overview of feeding procedures, and end with the firs inhabitants of the BRS160. There are all kinds of things to consider when you are stocking the tank. You really need to consider the must haves and work your way back from there. 1. Diet - If an eel or lion fish are something you just have to have it is probably going to have to be a dwarf species of lion or dwarf golden moray so they don't eat your fish. Even then you are probably ruling out smaller fish, shrimp, or crabs since they will likely become eel or lionfish snacks. In fact if you really like shrimp and crabs there is a whole host of fish like many wrasses and hawkfish which are basically off the table. If you really want a mandarin at some point you need to skip fish like Coris wrasse which will likely out-compete it for food. 2. Size - As size is concerned most fish stores or online vendors will be able to tell you pretty easy if the size of the fish is appropriate for the tank. Keep in mind this advice is generally on the liberal side and should really be considered a maximum. There is one big exception to that rule. If you are willing to give the fish back to the store when it gets too big or trade it with someone you know there is no reason you can’t put a juvenile fish in a tank which is smaller than the adult version would live in. In fact within the couple years that it takes to outgrow the tank you might even upgrade to a larger tank. Make sure it isn't a species that doesn't grow disproportionately fast and try not to be reckless but you can bend the rules if it is part of a long term plan and the health of the fish is part of that plan. 3. How Many Fish - There are a ton of rules about how many fish which are decent guidelines but I have never met a single reefer who actively follows them religiously. Most of us want as many fish as possible but every fish you add generally increases the need for water changes, potential for nutrient issues like algae growth. Too many fish, especially of the same type also reduces potential habitat and competition for food sources. When you are making your fish plan consider amount of available habitat. There are three basic areas in the tank. Sand dwellers like gobies, fish who like to perch on surfaces like hawk fish and fish that spend most of their time in open water like tangs, chromis and anthias. Try spreading the fish you select over the various habitats available in your aquascape. *Legal Stuff* The purpose and content of this video is to provide general information regarding the products and their applications as presented in the video. Product Spotlight: Reef Octopus RODC Aquarium Pumps

01:52
A New Benchmark in Controllable Water Pumps The Reef Octopus controllable Direct Current “DC” water pumps are the latest in variable speed flow technology and allows for refined control, enhanced performance and efficiency. The vast majority of circulation pumps available to hobbyist are alternating current "AC" pumps (the type of power that comes out of your wall outlet). Direct current pumps have several key advantages over traditional AC pumps. Most notably, you can control the rotational speed of the motor, thus electronically control water flow rates. DC pumps are also more efficient than AC pumps and produce less heat per volume of flow. Now the aquarist can have full control of the water flow through their sump, reactors, filters or closed loop systems!!! https://www.saltysupply.com/Reef-Octopus-RODC-Pumps-s/16456.htm
