Deep Sea Creatures [National Geographic Documentary 2017 HD]

53:56
Deep Sea Creatures [National Geographic Documentary 2017 HD] The Deep sea creature refers to organisms that live below the photic zone of the ocean. These creatures must survive in extremely harsh conditions, such as hundreds of bars of pressure, small amounts of oxygen, very little food, no sunlight, and constant, extreme cold. Most creatures have to depend on food floating down from above. These creatures live in very demanding environments, such as the abyssal or hadal zones, which, being thousands of meters below the surface, are almost completely devoid of light. The water is between 3 and 10 degrees Celsius and has low oxygen levels. Due to the depth, the pressure is between 20 and 1,000 bars. Creatures that live hundreds or even thousands of meters deep in the ocean have adapted to the high pressure, lack of light, and other factors. The depths of the ocean are festooned with the most nightmarish creatures imaginable. You might think you’re safe, because these critters live thousands of feet down in a cold dark abyss, but the vampire squid, which looks like a nightmare umbrella, and the frilled shark—a literal living fossil—will live on in the recesses of your mind long after you’ve clicked away. Enjoy these deep sea horrors and try to have a relaxing day afterward. ► NOTE : I'm a big fan of National Geographic and I just collect the best parts of National Geographic. I do not make money from National Geographic's Video. Thanks You very much

Measuring the Greatest Ocean Depth The Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench is the deepest known point in Earth's oceans. In 2010 the United States Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping measured the depth of the Challenger Deep at 10,994 meters (36,070 feet) below sea level with an estimated vertical accuracy of ± 40 meters. If Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, were placed at this location it would be covered by over one mile of water. The first depth measurements in the Mariana Trench were made by the British survey ship HMS Challenger, which was used by the Royal Navy in 1875 to conduct research in the trench. The greatest depth that they recorded at that time was 8,184 meters (26,850 feet). In 1951, another Royal Navy vessel, also named the "HMS Challenger," returned to the area for additional measurements. They discovered an even deeper location with a depth of 10,900 meters (35,760 feet) determined by echo sounding. The Challenger Deep was named after the Royal Navy vessel that made these measurements. In 2009, sonar mapping done by researchers aboard the RV Kilo Moana, operated by the University of Hawaii, determined the depth to be 10,971 meters (35,994 feet) with a potential error of ± 22 meters. The most recent measurement, done in 2010, is the 10,994 meter ( ± 40 meter accuracy) depth reported at the top of this article, measured by the United States Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping.

How Deep Is the Ocean In Reality?

17:26
A whopping 94% of all life-forms on Earth are aquatic. Such a huge number of living beings who can't survive without water is understandable. After all, more than 70% of our planet's surface is covered with water. The World Ocean includes the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean. There's enough water in the oceans to fill a 685-mile-long bathtub! One of the main nagging questions people have been asking for ages is "How deep is the ocean in reality?" Let’s find an answer to it. TIMESTAMPS Sunlit zone 1:21 Twilight zone 6:17 Midnight zone 10:19 The abyss 13:17 Trench zone 14:25 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -The Sunlit zone stretches from 14.5 ft, that is is the depth of a standard Olympic diving pool, to 561 ft under the water’s surface, where RMS Carpathia found her last dwelling. This ship became famous after her participation in the rescue of the Titanic survivors. -At 656 ft, the twilight zone begins. That's where you can see the giant oarfish. At a depth of 1,453 ft, you could reach the height of the Empire State Building if somebody powerful enough decided to submerge it under the water. The giant squid lives as deep as 2,952 ft below the surface. This is where the Twilight zone ends. -At a depth of 3,608 ft, there's the deepest volcano recorded by scientists. At 12,795 ft below the water’s surface, there are Air France flight 447 black boxes. Airbus A330 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in 2009. This is where the Midnight zone ends. -At a depth of 13,123 ft, the midnight zone ends, and the abyss lies ahead. 18,897 ft is the bottom of the abyss and the depth at which you can find the deepest shipwreck. SS Rio Grande sunk in 1941 in the South Atlantic and was discovered only in 1996. -At a depth of 19,685 ft, the abyss ends and gives way to the trench zone. At a depth of 36,070 ft, you will reach the very bottom of the ocean in its deepest point known to man: Challenger Deep. The deep ocean is the final frontier on planet Earth

14:49
Watch the latest in the Ocean series - What sharks reveal about the state of the Ocean: https://youtu.be/6xz1mxppMhY The ocean covers 70% of our planet. The deep-sea floor is a realm that is largely unexplored, but cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to go deeper than ever before. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 Beneath the waves is a mysterious world that takes up to 95% of Earth's living space. Only three people have ever reached the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean. The deep is a world without sunlight, of freezing temperatures, and immense pressure. It's remained largely unexplored until now. Cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to explore deeper than ever before. They are opening up a whole new world of potential benefits to humanity. The risks are great, but the rewards could be greater. From a vast wealth of resources to clues about the origins of life, the race is on to the final frontier The Okeanos Explorer, the American government state-of-the-art vessel, designed for every type of deep ocean exploration from discovering new species to investigating shipwrecks. On board, engineers and scientists come together to answer questions about the origins of life and human history. Today the Okeanos is on a mission to investigate the wreck of a World War one submarine. Engineer Bobby Moore is part of a team who has developed the technology for this type of mission. The “deep discover”, a remote operating vehicle is equipped with 20 powerful LED lights and designed to withstand the huge pressure four miles down. Equivalent to 50 jumbo jets stacked on top of a person While the crew of the Okeanos send robots to investigate the deep, some of their fellow scientists prefer a more hands-on approach. Doctor Greg stone is a world leading marine biologist with over 8,000 hours under the sea. He has been exploring the abyss in person for 30 years. The technology opening up the deep is also opening up opportunity. Not just to witness the diversity of life but to glimpse vast amounts of rare mineral resources. Some of the world's most valuable metals can be found deep under the waves. A discovery that has begun to pique the interest of the global mining industry. The boldest of mining companies are heading to the deep drawn by the allure of a new Gold Rush. But to exploit it they're also beating a path to another strange new world. In an industrial estate in the north of England, SMD is one of the world's leading manufacturers of remote underwater equipment. The industrial technology the company has developed has made mining possible several kilometers beneath the ocean surface. With an estimated 150 trillion dollars’ worth of gold alone, deep-sea mining has the potential to transform the global economy. With so much still to discover, mining in the deep ocean could have unknowable impact. It's not just life today that may need protecting; reaching the deep ocean might just allow researchers to answer some truly fundamental questions. Hydrothermal vents, hot springs on the ocean floor, are cracks in the Earth's crust. Some claim they could help scientists glimpse the origins of life itself. We might still be years away from unlocking the mysteries of the deep. Even with the latest technology, this kind of exploration is always challenging. As the crew of the Okeanos comes to terms with a scale of the challenge and the opportunity that lies beneath, what they and others discover could transform humanity's understanding of how to protect the ocean. It's the most hostile environment on earth, but the keys to our future may lie in the deep. 10 Creepy Sea Creatures You Didn't Know Existed

04:33
Did you know any of these amazing and scary deep sea creatures? It's hard to believe these bizarre animals exist. Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg 'Hatchet Fish' footage by Filmic Art : www.filmicart.com For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] Description: There is a vast world below the ocean that we have yet to discover in its entirety. While we seem to know nearly everything about the land, the sea still leaves much to be desired. As you go down into the depths of the ocean, you’ll notice a lot will change. For one, you’ll begin to be immersed in darkness. Second, the pressure will change. So, the creatures that have been discovered deep in the oceanic depths are quite different biologically, and they can be quite terrifying to look at. But once we begin to understand them, we can start to learn more about our existence, and even come closer to curing diseases and solving some of the world’s most complex mysteries. However, the sea creatures that have been discovered recently have shown to be just downright creepy and terrifying. You probably recall the Angler Fish, especially if you’re seen the Disney movie, “Finding Nemo”. If you didn’t realize that this fish is the real deal, get ready for new additions to your nightmares. It wasn’t a work of fiction or some messed up fantasy of some Disney Imagineer. The fish that we see in this video is actually female, and the male is a small weakling, wandering the sea to find a female with her pheromones. The male then attaches itself to the female and becomes a parasite. Every part of the male merges with the female except for the testicles, which the female uses to impregnate herself. Jokes aside, this is quite a fascinating process despite how creepy it is. Similar to the angler fish is the Viper Fish, which has a natural extra attachment that illuminates in the darkness of the sea with the purpose of attracting prey. The blob fish is a creature that you wonder what God was smoking or shooting up when he decided to create the blob fish. This fish has no bones, and literally just hangs out on the ocean floor and hopes that food comes to its mouth. Whether you want to worship the blob fish for its epic level of laziness or wonder how in the world the species is still in existence with such an apathetic demeanor, it’s still creepy to look at. Then we have the goblin shark, which is pretty much like the underwater version of the alien from the movie “Alien” due to its protruding mouth. The goblin shark has a large snout and needle-like teeth that are sharp and deadly. For a completely random sea creature, we have the Christmas Tree Worms, which really look like tiny walking fir trees that come in different colors. The branches or hair-like appendages help them breathe as well as consume phytoplankton. Then we have the sea pig, which looks nothing like the pigs we have on land. But instead the sea pig is a multi-tubed foot sea creature that is closely related to the sea cucumber. It eats by pulling water and absorbing organic food. Quite innovative, even though it looks creepy. For more creepy sea creatures, check out the rest of the video for more. BIGGEST Sea Creatures Around The World!

Fin Whale The fin whale is the second largest creature on Earth after the blue whale. It has been severely affected by commercial whaling and now it is rare to see one. If you have seen one, consider yourself lucky! They can grow as long as 89 feet (27 m) in length and can weigh between 40 to 80 tons! The maximum ever recorded weighed in at 114 tons!! They can live to be over 100 years old if left alone. The fin whale’s body is built for speed and it can even go faster than the fastest ocean steamship. It’s capable of speeds of up to 37 km/h but can go short bursts of even 47 km/h, earning it the nickname “greyhound of the sea”. Fin Whales have a very unique coloring with the right underside of their jaw, right lip, and the right side of their baleen being a yellowish-white, while the left-side is gray, making them look asymmetrical. Fun fact, fin whales and blue whales make the lowest frequency sounds of any animals. When they were first recorded by submarines, scientists thought they were tectonic plates grinding. Kind of makes you wonder about what is causing other mysterious ocean sounds! 9.) Portuguese Man of War While this is often considered a jellyfish, the Portuguese man-of-war is actually not an “it” but a “they”! It is made up of a colony of organisms called polyps that work together known as a siphonophore. While the tentacles can extend 165 feet (50 m), the average is about 30 feet (9 m) long. Still nothing to scoff at!! Also known as “the floating terror”, their body is between 5 inches to a foot wide (13 cm- 130 cm). They are usually found in groups of about a thousand or more, and have no independent means of movement. They either drift on the currents or catch the wind, so even though you should be super careful of jellyfish, they aren’t ever out to get you on purpose! The tentacles on a man-of-war are extremely venomous and very painful if you get stung but they are rarely deadly. The venom is typically used to paralyze their prey, such as small fish and other smaller creatures. Also keep in mind that a man-of-war does not need to be alive in order to give off a powerful sting, even if it has washed up on shore and looks dead, it can still sting you! The Portuguese man-of-war floats around the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Indian and Pacific. So keep an eye out if you are swimming around these areas! 8.) Giant Clam The giant clam is the largest living bivalve mollusk on earth. (Bivalve mollusks include clams, oysters, and mussels). Native to the warm waters of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, giant clams are capable of growing an average of 4 feet (1 m) in length and weighing close to 500 pounds (250 kg)! However, some species of clams have been known to grow as long as 6 feet. The large majority of a giant clam’s mass is in its shell, with the soft parts accounting for only approximately 10% of the weight. Giant clams are now endangered because they apparently are also quite delicious and have been hunted for centuries for its healthy protein. The giant clam has one chance to find its perfect home because once it chooses its spot, it stays there for the rest of its life. They can live up to 100 years or more, as long as they are in the wild. Most of the giant clams you see today have been raised in captivity and are really popular in large aquariums. Giant clams achieve their enormous proportions by consuming the sugars and proteins produced by the billions of algae that live in their tissues. This symbiotic relationship protects the algae and they are responsible for the unique coloration. No two giant clams are alike! 7.) Great White Shark According to National Geographic, great white sharks are the largest predatory fish in the world. They grow to an average of 15 feet (4.6 m) in length. However, there have been some who have grown to 20 feet (6 m) in length! In fact, the largest Great White Shark ever recorded in the wild was estimated to be 26 feet long, which is more than half the length of a basketball court. Combine this with a bunch of teeth, and this is why people get so scared. They are known to weigh up to 5,000 pounds (2268 kg). The heaviest Great White Shark ever recorded in the wild was estimated to weigh in at a whopping 7,328 pounds. . Wind energy: Deep-sea wind farm in Atlantic could meet world's power needs - TomoNews

06:15
STANFORD, CALIFORNIA — The entire world could be powered by one deep-sea wind farm stretching across the Atlantic, a new study finds. Building an installation the size of India would could meet the whole world's power needs, according to a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Doctors Anna Possner and Ken Caldeira from the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University pointed out wind speeds over the ocean are on average 70 percent higher than over land, the Independent reported. Land-based wind farms have an upper threshold in the amount of energy that can be converted into electricity due to the combined drag of the spinning blades. Other studies have found land-based farms to have a limit of about 1.5 watts per square meter. Possner and Caldeira say it would be possible to produce 6 watts per square meter in the North Atlantic. Power output would be seasonal, with levels dropping to a fifth of the yearly average during the summer time. Several engineering challenges would have to be overcome. A deep-sea wind farm would have to operate in remote and harsh conditions where waves frequently exceed three meters (9.8 ft), according to the researchers. Laying transmission cables that stretch across the ocean floor and then connect to floating turbines in open ocean would be another obstacle. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Deep Ocean: Lost World Of The Pacific Part 2 - David Attenborough Documentary HD

52:09
An underwater adventure in search of living fossils. The island of New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean sits on the equator, where immediately next to a richly-colored coral reef, a sharp underwater cliff drops down to 1,000 meters. A long-awaited exploration down the little known depths of this tropical sea is finally about to start. NHK has teamed up with eminent marine biologist Mark Erdmann, discoverer of the coelacanth in Indonesia. The spherical transparent submarine, which successfully captured the world’s first moving images of a giant squid in its natural habitat, is used as the team encounters true living fossil species one after another. During their last dive, in the darkest depths of caves in the deep-sea cliff, the crew encounters a huge, unknown exotic fish… Narrated by Sir David Attenborough. For this shoot, the submarine was equipped with a cutting-edge 4K camera, for pristine images. Join the film crew on an exciting adventure into a deep sea never before seen by humans, captured on six cameras shooting multi-angles, creating a breath-taking underwater documentary. Part 2: Lights in the Abyss The NHK team that captured the world’s first footage of a live giant squid in its natural habitat is setting out for another deep-sea adventure. They will give us a look at the amazing life forms with luminous bodies that have survived the harsh, pitch-dark deep sea environment of the Pacific.

Most SPOOKY Sea Creatures In The World!

Check out the Most SPOOKY Sea Creatures In The Ocean! From terrifying deep sea monsters to mysterious and bizarre animals, this top 10 list of weird ocean creatures will amaze you! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "REAL Mermaid Sightings Around The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/ChM0CBRmVsM Watch our "10 Sea Monsters ATTACKING A Boat!" video here: https://youtu.be/0XROvoPCDNc Watch our "STRANGEST Animals People Keep As Pets!" video here: https://youtu.be/OMa96nPqz-Y 7. Northern Stargazer Astroscopus guttatus is a strange-looking fish that’s known more commonly as the Northern Stargazer. In paradoxical contrast to its romantic-sounding name, the Northern Stargazer is, for lack of a better term, unattractive, if not downright homely. It dwells at the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay and along the eastern seaboard of the United States, from North Carolina to New York, in waters up to 120 feet deep. So if you live around here, keep an eye out! 6. Giant Squid Until 2006, the existence of the giant squid was considered to be barely more realistic than that of the Yeti, the Loch Ness Monster, Sasquatch, and dozens of other creatures that were rumored to exist, but remained largely relegated to mythological status. The only thing that placed the giant squid a notch or two above the rest of those creatures were the scars left on whales and the discovery of their carcasses by fishermen after having floated to the water’s surface. 5. Black Dragonfish The black dragonfish is a deep-sea dweller that resides about 2,000 meters below the ocean’s surface. The amazing thing about this guy is that is represents one of the most extreme cases of sexual dimorphism, which refers to a distinct difference between the sexes in size or appearance that exceeds the fundamental difference between sexual organs. 4. Deep Sea Anglerfish Like the black dragonfish, male deep sea anglerfish are smaller than females. In this case, some male species of anglerfish are parasitic, and subsist by attaching themselves to the body of a female. While they may not have a gut, they do have teeth! 3. Goblin Shark The goblin shark is a rare species of deep-sea shark. It’s the only surviving relative of a 125-million-year-old lineage known as the family Mitsukurinidae. Because of this, the goblin shark has earned the nickname “living fossil.” The goblin shark’s distinctive appearance is creepy to begin with: it’s pink-skinned with an elongated, flattened snout that resembles a sword blade. 2. Blobfish Our next spooky sea creature is, quite possibly, the world’s ugliest animal. I don’t know, between this and the deep sea angler fish, which one do you think?? Let me know in the comments below!! It goes through life doing exactly what you’d probably expect a blob to do - not much. In the deep waters off the coasts of Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand that it calls home, the blobfish survives essentially by drifting around on the ocean floor at great depths and eating whatever appears in front of it, namely deepwater crustaceans. 1. Frilled Shark At first glance, the frilled shark looks like something you might see in a science fiction movie - perhaps, for example, an unlikely hybrid between an eel and a shark. The frilled shark however, is real. Like the goblin shark, it’s often referred to as a “living fossil,” a nickname that alludes to the minimal change the species has undergone since prehistoric times. 10 Rare Deep Sea Catches

08:44
From the giant squid found near Antarctica, to the most awesome fish inside a jelly fish ! These are 10 RARE Deep Sea Catches ! Basket Star -- Was it an alien life form? Nothing so exotic. But a fisherman in Singapore reeled in a catch that caught worldwide attention. The weird, writing octopus-like creature was actually a basket star … a distant relative of the starfish. The fisherman said he thought he had reeled in a bunch of seaweed since it’s so prevalent in the area. Although it looks like the creature has hundred of arms wriggling about, it only has five arms, which are each divided into more dexterous ‘branchlets’. This really was a rare deep sea catch since Basket Stars live so deep under the sea … some 6,000 feet or so … and feed mostly on zooplankton. A Controversial Catch -- A Tiger shark measuring nearly 20 feet long was caught off the Australian coast in 2015. Tiger sharks normally grow to lengths between 10 to 14 feet, and are found worldwide in tropical and temperate waters. The apex predators are known to hunt a variety of animals including sea snakes, turtles, dolphins and whales. When photos of the enormous carcass lying on a fishing boat were posted on Facebook, it prompted a social media backlash. Critics compared the display to Cecil the Lion, who was controversially killed by an American big game hunter. What do you think? Ghost Octopus -- A remotely operated submarine called Deep Discover made an amazing discovery when it caught this creature on video: A mysterious, ghostlike octopus sitting on a rock … at a depth of nearly 4,300 meters … or over 14, 000 feet below the surface! The unusual octopus was found during a deep-sea dive in the Hawaiian Archipelago. Researchers said its ghostly appearance is due to the animal’s lack of pigment cell called chromatophores, which most cephalopods possess. While the newly discovered creature is thought to be previously undescribed, researchers have classified it as an incirrate octopod ... meaning it lacks fins and cirri, which are wispy strands found on the arms of some octopuses. Cirrate octopods have fins, and are sometimes called Dumbo octopods … a reference to their resemblance to the Disney cartoon elephant. This small ghost octopus is the first incirrate octopod observed at such an extreme depth. A lot of people think this creature should be named ‘Casper’ … can you think of a better name? Here’s the Catch -- This is kind of like a rare deep sea double catch … A fish is caught inside a jellyfish … and the incident is caught on film! You can see in Tim Samuel’s photograph that the fish seems to realize it’s made a horrible mistake … if it’s any consolation to the fish, the picture will no doubt provide fodder for plenty of internet memes. The incident took place off the coast of Australia's Byron Bay earlier in 2016. The species of the fish and jellyfish are difficult to identify from the picture. But some experts think the jellyfish is a type of stinging jellyfish known as a cubomedusan (koo-boe-med-ooh-san) … and the fish might be a juvenile trevally (treh-valley). Because that fish species is known to evade predators by camouflaging itself among the stingers of certain jellyfish species, it likely intended to get close to the jellyfish … but not actually inside it! Did the jellyfish end up eating the fish … or did the two creatures strike up an unlikely alliance and go on to have some amazing aquatic adventures? As it was decided to let nature run its course … we may never know. Can you think of a happy ending? Gigantic Giant Squid -- A squid the size of a minibus was captured in the area of Antarctica’s isolated Ross Sea. Researchers kept it on ice for some 8 months before thawing it out to discover it’s wasn't just another giant squid … it was a gigantic squid, weighing 770 pounds! Scientists identified the enormous creature’s gender as female, with 8 arms measuring over three feet each, and dual tentacles reaching 7 feet. One of the scientists speculated that animals such as this may have inspired legends like the Kraken, who often battled other huge sea creatures, like whales. Analyzing the huge squid is part of a research project that scientists hope will yield more information about where giant squids figure in the overall marine-based food chain … In addition to identify various squid types and find out more about their dietary patterns and life-cycle. Sea Turtles (HD) | JONATHAN BIRD'S BLUE WORLD

12:37
In Malaysia there is an island known for more sea turtles than virtually anywhere on Earth. Jonathan visits this amazing ecosystem to learn about the life cycle of sea turtles. He is surprised to discover an amazingly complex and competitive environment. This is an HD upload of a previously released segment. ********************************************************************** If you like Jonathan Bird's Blue World, don't forget to subscribe! You can join us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/BlueWorldTV Twitter https://twitter.com/BlueWorld_TV Instagram @blueworldtv Web: http://www.blueworldTV.com ********************************************************************** We head out towards the reefs of Sipadan island. This island is so small that you can walk all the way around it on the beach in an hour. Yet, it has a huge population of sea turtles. As the school of fish swims away, I spot my first sea turtle—a Green sea turtle swimming over the reef. It wasn’t hard because they’re everywhere. Some are swimming around, while others are napping on and in the reef. Sea turtles actually sleep underwater while holding their breath. A sea turtle can easily hold its breath over an hour! A few hundred feet away, I find a Hawksbill sea turtle munching on the reef. She is plucking out tasty sponges and invertebrates that hide in the coral, rather than eat the coral itself. It takes a tough stomach to digest this stuff. As we circle the island, I can see the tracks left in the sand by females that have climbed the beach to lay their eggs. It all starts when a male, identified by his long tail, catches up with a cooperative female and courts her. From the surface, I see the action and I prepare to film it. The mating has begun, and I quietly approach to film the action. Mating is not easy for the female sea turtle. She must swim—and rise to breathe—for both of them. The male's long tail holds the female and fertilizes the eggs, while claws on his front flippers give him the ability to grasp the female's shell. The commotion doesn't go unnoticed by other males in the area. They flock to the mating pair, which have drifted away from the reef. Eventually, no less than four additional male turtles arrive to challenge the suitor. They all try the same techniques and it is starting to wear him down. Meanwhile the female is near exhaustion. The male is only struggling to hold on….the female is struggling to survive. Hours later, the male has outlasted his rivals. He fertilizes the female's eggs and with luck his genes will continue on. As if her job weren't hard enough already, the female now faces another tremendous task--to lay the eggs—but it must wait until nightfall. After the sun sets, I head to the beach in total darkness. The females come ashore and lay their eggs in the sand. I have found a turtle hauling herself out of the water, painstakingly clawing her way up the beach to high ground. Although sea turtles live their entire lives in the ocean, they lay their eggs in a nest on the beach. After the sea turtle reaches an area well above the high tide line, she begins to throw sand around to create a pit. She's out of her element and vulnerable. The slightest sound or light would frighten her back into the water. She must stop frequently to catch her breath. Her crushing weight on land literally asphyxiates her. She begins to dig a hole about 3 feet deep with her rear flippers. The hole doesn't just protect the eggs from predators. The sex of the baby turtles is a function of the incubation temperature. A shallow nest baking in the sun will be too warm and all the babies will be female. A deep one will be too cold and the babies will all be male. Digging to the right depth insures a good mix of males and females. At last she begins to lay as many as 100 squishy eggs about the size of ping pong balls into the nest. In 2 months, these eggs will hatch and the baby turtles will emerge. After she has finished laying her eggs, she carefully fills in the hole. Then she cleverly disguises the exact location of the nest by flinging some sand around. After two hours of effort, she plods her way laboriously back to the sea, completely exhausted. Two months later, newly hatched sea turtles race to the sea. Each baby turtle must rush past a gauntlet of predators from land, sky and sea to reach the open ocean. Odds are, only one of these baby sea turtles will survive. On their journey, the sea turtles must fight their way through the surf, swim across the shallows and then make their way to the open ocean, away from predators on the reef. They won’t return to their home on the reef until they are large enough to be safe—about the size of a dinner plate. It’s a long and perilous journey but if this sea turtle survives, it may go on to live over a hundred years.

Mermaid & Sharks at Deep Sea World - Daniela Rodler

03:31
With this little video clip I want to share my adventures as mermaid at Deep Sea World Aqurium Edinburgh. Thanks to the DSW aquarists I got some underwater video clips to share my adventures now! I had a wonderful time at DSW, and, despite cold water temperatures, I was pleased to meet all these beautiful sea animals, like many different species of sharks, a sting ray and other rays, crabs, many sea fish and other animals. It was such an amazing experience to meet them underwater and to watch their reactions to a mermaid. The seven 3-meter sand tiger sharks I dived with have been the biggest animals of the aquarium. They are impressive creatures and especially this shark species needs to be protected. So many of them have been hunted down in the past all over the world and were mistaken for agressive, human-attacking monsters. I really hope human race will finally accept that animals are the greatest gift on earth! Imagine our planet without them... At land, two seals made me very happy! Believe me, there´s nothing comparable to a seal´s kiss.... Enjoy the video!!! World's 10 Most Bizarre Sea Creatures

03:04
Here are 10 of the more unusual creatures found underwater. From monstrous to ethereal, the sea is filled with all sorts of magnificent specimens. Here are 10 of the more unusual creatures found underwater. Number 10. Siphonophores. They're clear and fragile, but given the length and bioluminescence of some of them, they can be quite a spectacle to behold. Select ones have been measured at over 40 meters long. Be careful around them though. They break easily. Number 9. Vampire Squid. Like its namesake, this cephalopod wanders about in the dark. In order to survive the deep area it occupies, it has had to give up some other functions, like spewing ink clouds. Number 8. Anaximenes Amphipod. Looking like the offspring of a water glass and an alien, this mysterious diaphanous crustacean was spotted off the coast of Southern Turkey. Number 7. Goblin Shark. Ideally suited for a sci-fi horror movie, this sea beast is actually built for roaming around the deep sea. Its beady little eyes are the result of not surfacing often. Number 6. Dumbo Octopus. It was named thus because it has two flaps on its head that resemble big ears, just like the cartoon elephant has. When these creatures float around they take on an umbrella-like appearance. Number 5. Colossal Squid. Yeah, they're big. These squid can reach about 17 feet in length. Despite the claims gone viral on social media, they do not grow to be the size of military submarines. Number 4. Barreleye. Transparent fish are not rare, but this one only has a see-through head, making it quite unique. It has eyes that completely rotate around their sockets, making it possible for the barreleye to look through itself. Number 3. Disco Clam. It's a bivalve and a light show. Scientists have discovered that it produces the pulses by moving its silica-covered lips back and forth to catch and reflect rays, just like a disco ball. Number 2. Predatory Tunicate. They live anchored to the walls of deep canyons and must feed on whatever passes by -- sort of like a venus flytrap. And if there aren't any other tunicates nearby, they're able to reproduce on their own. Number 1. Gigantocypris. Oddly, it's also known as the Giant ostracod, even though it's only about 2-and-a-half centimeters wide. 20 percent of its body is taken up by their eyes, which are made of big reflectors and light-sensitive materials.

9 of the World's Strangest Sea Creatures

13:14
World’s strangest sea creatures. These strange creatures were discovered in the deep sea & still live underwater! Mysterious sea monsters, which will blow your mind! Today's video was done in collaboration with What Lurks Below! Click here to check out their channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrLg26XASQO2rfheSFV-F6w/videos Subscribe for new videos: http://goo.gl/SaufF4 Follow us on Instagram: @theywillkillyou 9: The Venus Flytrap Sea Anemone This sea anemone bares a superficial resemblance to a Venus flytrap. It's a deep sea species that captures its prey by closing its tentacles. The tentacles are also used for protection. It is commonly found in the deep water canyons in the Gulf of Mexico. 8: The Dumbo Octopus The Grimpoteuthis —also known as the Dumbo octopus—draws its name from the prominent ear-like fins protruding from its mantle, thus bearing a resemblance to Dumbo, Walt Disney’s flying elephant. It is a pelagic umbrella octopus that typically lives at depths of between 10,000 to 13,000 feet below, although some specimens have been recorded living at more than 23,000 feet below sea level, the deepest of any known octopus species! 7: Sea Angels Sea Angels are a group of very small swimming sea slugs belonging to the Gymnosomata clade. They have a wide geographic distribution & may be found in regions ranging from tropic seas to polar areas. They are mostly transparent, gelatinous species. The sea angels that live in warmer areas are usually far smaller than those living in cold regions. They use tentacles to grasp their prey & are equipped with terminal mouths with radulae, or anatomical structures somewhat similar to tongues that are common to mollusks. 6: The Squid Worm Theuthidodrilus also known as the squid worm—was first discovered by marine biologists in the Celebes Sea in October of 2007. It is a unique “transitional” creature that has the behavioral & physical characteristic of both free-swimming organisms & sea-bed dwelling animals. Its more distinguishable physical features is the tentacle-like appendages protruding from its head. 10 of these tentacles are commonly around the same length or longer than the squid worm’s body. 5: The Frilled Shark The frilled shark belongs to the Chlamydoselachidae family & is 1 of 2 extant species found widely distributed along the Pacific & Atlantic Oceans. This deep sea creature has been deemed a living fossil due to the fact that it exhibits several primitive features, & also because it has had little history of evolution over millions of years. 4: The Christmas Tree Worm The Spirobranchus giganteus, also known as the Christmas tree worm, is a tube-building worm belonging to the Serpulidae family. It has a segmented, tubular body lined with small appendages called chaeta that aid the worm’s mobility. One of its most noticeable features consists of 2 chromatically hued spiral structures shaped like Christmas trees, & that the worm uses for feeding & respiration. These structures feature radioles which are feather-like tentacles that are heavily ciliated. 3: The Pink See-Through Fantasia The pink see-through fantasia—also known as the pink swimming sea cucumber—was discovered in 2007 in a remote part of the Western Pacific Ocean called the Celebes Sea. It was found by a team of scientists & underwater photographers at a depth of 8,200 feet. The research expedition was formed by experts from the National Geographic Society, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, & the WHOI Ocean Life Institute. 2: The Blobfish Based on photographs from decompressed species, this creature was voted the “World’s Ugliest Animal” in September of 2013. Its low-density flesh means that the blobfish looks differently when it is out of water. They typically live at depths of 2,000 to 4,000 feet below. The pressure in these deep-sea areas may be up to 120 times greater than that at sea level. The flesh of the blobfish is a gelatinous mass only slightly less denser than water, which enables it to float above the ocean floor without wasting energy on swimming. It may be found in the deep waters off the coasts of Tasmania & mainland Australia & also in the waters of New Zealand. 1: The Ocean Sunfish The common mola—also known as the ocean sunfish—is the heaviest known bony fish in the world, with an average weight ranging from 545 to over 2,000 pounds. From fin-to-fin, a mature sunfish commonly measures from 6 to 8 feet in length. Larger specimens have been known to measure 14 feet across & the fins & weigh up to 5,100 pounds. Its body is flattened laterally, somewhat resembling a fish head with a tail. When its ventral & dorsal fins are extended, the sunfish can be as tall as it is long. Its diet mainly consists of jellyfish, which it eats in large amounts so that it can maintain its bulk.

Deep Sea Exploration Crew Captures Remarkable Footage Of World War II Shipwreck

01:25
For decades, it has been unclear what caused the SS Coast Trader, a U.S. cargo vessel, to go down near the western coast in 1942. A recent investigation of the wreckage has cleared up quite a bit about the incident. For decades, it has been unclear what caused the SS Coast Trader, a US cargo vessel, to go down near the western coast in 1942.  Though officials attributed the sinking to an onboard boiler explosion, many believed an attack by Japan’s navy was the actual cause.  A recent investigation of the wreckage involving the E/V Nautilus and personnel from both the Ocean Exploration Trust and the NOAA Office of Marine Sanctuaries has cleared up quite a bit about the incident.  Last week, an underwater rover was sent down to the wreckage, which is located between the state of Washington and Vancouver Island. After inspecting the vessel, one of the researchers said, “You can see right down into the boiler flats, and they're intact. I've seen other torpedoed ships and this is definitely major damage and consistent with the damage of a Type 93 Japanese torpedo."  He also noted that other than the torpedo hole, the SS Coast Trader is largely intact.

Qalupalik Created by the Inuit people, the Qalupalik is a sea creature that is actually very humanoid in its shape. But, it has a few distinct features that makes it a true sea monster. The skin of the Qalupalik is green, and when you look at the hands of the creature, they look more like claws than hands. 7. Vodyanoy The Vodyanoy is a "water spirit" that comes from East Slavic stories. This particular spirit was said to dwell in watery areas like lakes, ponds, and even rivers. It was almost always described as male, one with a tall yet wide body, which included a very wide face. Its skin was flabby, and on its face was a beard that sometimes went down to its feet. 6. Moby Not all sea monsters come from ancient mythology, and the legend of Moby is one that has permeated modern myth and legend. Moby was a white whale (of which some do live in the real world, called Albino Whales) of enormous size and power. So much so that when the infamous Captain Ahab first saw it, the whale bit off his leg. He set out on a quest to the whale for the pain that it had caused him. 5. The Kraken There are many tales of many sea creatures that could crush entire ships. But few are as famous as the legendary, and infamous, Kraken. In most mythological tales, the Kraken was a massive squid of enormous size. It was said to be longer than the biggest ships in the world, some saying that it was hundreds of feet long if not long. Some even claimed that the Kraken could be over a mile long. 4. Hydra In Greek Mythology, the Hydra was one of the deadliest creatures on the face of the Earth. It was said to be the son of Typhon and Echidna (two monstrous snake-like creatures in their own right), and dwelled in lake of Lerna in the Argolid, which is one of the "regional units" of Greece. The creature was so powerful, that its very smell could people, and it had venomous breath. 3. Loch Ness Monster In the Scottish Highlands lies a body of water called Loch Ness. Within those waters is said to be a sea creature not subtly called the "Loch Ness Monster", and the disturbing thing about the creature is that despite people claiming that it doesn't exist, and apparently "proving" that it doesn't exist...people keep seeing the creature. 2. Cthulhu From the mind of H.P. Lovecraft, the legend and infamy of Cthulhu is one that transcends common myth and legend, and has become something much more. "Born" in the title Call of Cthulhu, H.P. Lovecraft described the as a: "A monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind." 1. Leviathan In the Christian and Jewish Bibles (and their offshoots), numerous mentions are made of a sea creature that was powerful enough to challenge himself, this was the birth of the Leviathan.
