Sadly, I have some crappy genetics and gaining muscle and losing fat has always been an uphill battle for me. But I’ve never given up and in the process, I’ve learned everything there is to gaining muscle and losing fat, naturally. This also probably explains why I became an anti-aging, endocrinology doctor - which is the study of hormones. And I’ve coached professional and Olympic athletes, including lots of bodybuilders. So today, I’m here to pass on all of my wisdom, so you can learn from my mistakes. I’ve simplified the entire process of gaining muscle to 4 simple and clinically proven “ingredients”. 4 Primary Ingredients For Building Muscle Ingredient #1 - HORMONES Before anything can be said and done, you must have the right hormones for building muscle. They need to be optimized. We all have different genetics and please don’t compare yourself to someone else who might have great genetics and then think there’s something wrong with you. Just as someone who is a genius and has a high IQ, some people are just born with lots of muscle cells and the perfect hormones for building muscle and losing fat. If you don’t optimize your hormones, anything else you do will NOT work and it’ll be a waste of effort, time and money. In fact, the right hormonal environment will make you grow muscle without doing anything - no exercise, diets or supplements. And, this is exactly what happens when you hit puberty and all of a sudden you start getting muscular, leaner, more aggressive, hornier, etc. It’s ALL about the hormones. But let’s move on to the second most important ingredient and that’s EXERCISE Ingredient #2 - EXERCISE In order for muscle to grow, it FIRST needs to be “stimulated” and that requires exercise. The correct form of exercise ALSO produces important hormones and growth factors, that will build muscle. And in order to do this, you need to lift weights. Now, this can be with dumbbells, barbells, cables, machines or your own bodyweight. It doesn’t matter. Okay, now that you’ve stimulated the muscle, have produced the right hormones, it’s time to FEED your muscles. Ingredient #2 - DIET If you don’t feed your muscles, the workouts will cause you to LOSE muscle. In fact, this is what happened to me when I first started. I thought I’d lift weights to make my muscles grow and then eat less food to lose fat. But all I did was get smaller and weaker. I was like anorexic. However, you don’t need that much extra food. Increase your calories by about 250-500 daily and see how you look and feel after a month. If you’re not getting fat, then good. If you are, lower the calories a little. This has to do with YOUR body, so listen to it, pay attention. As far as WHAT to eat. Okay… this is where all the confusion comes. Simple, easy and effective. Ingredient #4 - REST Now that you’ve stimulate and fed the muscle, you need to REST it. Just like a baby, you need your rest to grow. As far as sleep, get as much as you need. On these days your muscles start to slowly but steadily grow which means that they crave all kinds of nutrients and minerals. - A combo of carbohydrates with protein about 30 minutes before going to bed is helpful for muscle gain. 2 Muscle Gain Tips Nobody Knows About | Bodybuilding Secrets Revealed! 💪

So if you missed my last video where I talked about the 3 Muscle Building Mistakes I wish I knew before I started lifting, you can check it out by clicking the blue highlighted words above. Today, we’re going to go over the 2 muscle gain tips that nobody really talks about, but can be insanely beneficial for you. Especially if you’re having a hard time with growing specific bodyparts and these tips both relate directly to Stretching the fascia around your muscles. Tip #1 – How, When and WHY Should You Stretch The Facia? First of all, you’ve all heard me talk about how static stretching should never be done before training, and that still stands. This is because static stretching is the quickest way to lose that muscle elasticity that helps you train with heavy loads. Static stretching requires you to hold a stretch for more than 20 seconds and this results, in simple terms, in you disconnecting your muscles from your nervous system which makes them weaker. Another way to explain this is that they essentially lose their stretch-reflex potential. Just like a rubber band, if you hold it stretched for a long time, when you finally let it go it will retract, but not back to its original tight form. So if you’re going to stretch before a workout, stick to dynamic stretching to force blood to the area you’re about to train. However, don’t think static stretching has no place in your training. Believe it or not it can actually help you’re muscle gains if performed AFTER your workout. This is because static stretching stretches the fascia which is almost like a sack that surrounds your muscles. Simply put, if the fascia is too tight, your muscles don’t have room to grow optimally. But by spending some time stretching the fascia after training, we’re giving the muscles we trained more room to grow. The second reason why static stretching after training is great for muscle growth is because during the stretch you’re cutting off blood circulation to the muscle and then once you release the stretch new blood forces its way back in bringing vital oxygen and nutrients it needs to start the repair process. To take advantage of this tip, all you need to do is spend 5 to 10 minutes after your workout static stretching the muscles you trained. For example, if you just trained chest, static stretch your chest with 3 – 4 sets of 30 – 60 second holds resting 20 – 30 seconds between sets.Now you don’t have to KILL YOURSELVES with these stretches. Apply pressure with the stretch, but don’t try to rip and tear the muscles apart. Tip #2 – Flexing Between Sets! Believe it or not flexing between your sets can help expand the fascia as well and give a lot of the same benefits we just talked about. Remember that flexing brings more blood to the area which brings oxygen and nutrients and can help increase the intensity of the pump you get from your workouts which is ALWAYS a good thing Also, for those of you who have a hard time really feeling your muscles as you train them, flexing between sets can help establish a stronger mind-muscle connection which over time will lead to more intense and efficient workouts! For example, if training chest, a great way to FLEX the area would be to push your hands together and hold this for about 10 seconds max. But remember, you still need to REST between sets, so doing the flex once between each set for about 10 seconds is enough to make a difference. Conclusion There you have it, these are my two muscle building tips. Static Stretching AFTER training and flexing between sets. I know, it sounds too simple and too good to be true, but in my experience it’s the little things that make the biggest differences when it comes to fitness! Get back to your bodybuilding roots and experience unbelievable growth. | Arnold Schwarzenegger's Training Tips | Chest: "There are three chest exercises that should always be done," Arnold says. "The bench press, the incline bench press at different angles, and the dumbbell flye." Back: "For back, I did chin-ups, bent-over barbell and dumbbell rows, and the T-bar row. Any kind of rowing movement will give you that thickness. Those are the exercises I relied on from the beginning of my career to the end." Arms: Arnold relied on the barbell curl to build thick biceps, but he also used incline dumbbell curls and concentration curls to isolate his biceps. "For triceps," Arnold says, "we did a lot of narrow [close-grip] bench press in the early days. And then triceps push downs and overhead triceps extensions later." Shoulders: Arnold's shoulders were built by barbell presses, behind-the-neck barbell presses, lateral raises, military presses, and dumbbell presses. "We always did presses behind the neck and a special dumbbell press which would stretch out the front delt at the bottom and fully flex it at the top. Now those are called Arnold presses." Because after spending years building muscle naturally I've learned that there are certain useless exercises that you should avoid entirely other exercises that you might want to consider incorporating and then there are the exercises that you just cant go without. Exercises that by themselves have the power to transform your physique. I've narrowed this list down to just seven of the most important exercises that you absolutely should have as a staple part of your routine to efficiently build the most muscle in the shortest amount of time. By mastering these 7 key compound exercises you'll see incredible results even if you're not doing any other exercises in the gym. And I made this video specifically for men not because women can't benefit from these exercises as well but because the ideal attractive body type for men is a V shape whereas for women it's more of an hourglass figure. So even though a lot of the exercises do crossover for both men women this video is specifically to help you develop the best manly physique with the least amount of exercises possible. I'm going to list off these exercises in no particular order, so Let's start first with a very important upper body exercise the bent over barbell Row. With this exercise you'll be working the rhomboids which are the muscles that connect your shoulder blades together so your upper back muscles and you'll also be working the back of your shoulder and your biceps. This is one of the most important pulling movements that you can do. Because you're working multiple muscle groups responsible for Pulling you're able to lift a lot more weight with this compound exercise then if you were to isolate any one of these muscles individually. By strengthening your rhomboids and your posterior deltoid you'll be tightening up your upper back which will help you hold yourself straight up and maintain a better more attractive upright posture. Since you can lift heavy weight with this exercise your biceps are also going to get a lot of stimulation because you'll be lifting a weight that would be impossible to lift with an isolated movement like bicep curls. A basic bent over row is done by grabbing a barbell with your hands a little wider than shoulder-width apart. Stick your butt out and stick your chest out before beginning the movement. Then bend down by about 60 degrees so you're a little higher than being fully parallel to the ground and you want let the weight hang straight down, do not flex your shoulders. While keeping your chest out pull the barbell inward towards your stomach and aim to touch your belly button with the bar. Then bring it back down to that hanging position and repeat this motion for reps. The great thing about rows is that you can do it with a barbell or you can do it with dumbbells, but a general rule of thumb to remember is that you'll be able to lift more weight and typically you'll be able to build more mass with barbells over dumbbells. Also by changing the angles at which you bend during a bent over row you can Target different parts of your back. A fully bent-over position where you're at a 90 degree angle will Target more of your lats and the middle of your back whereas standing more upright will Target more of your traps and upper back. Let's move on to another staple exercise that you should be doing, barbell and dumbbell chest presses. While the rows will help you develop the posterior or the back part of your upper body the chest presses are there to help you develop the anterior or the front part of your upper body. It'll hit your chest, the front head of your shoulders as well as your triceps. With chest presses you want to spend the majority of your time doing them at two different angles flat and incline. If your weakness is your upper chest you want to spend more of your time doing incline presses. if your upper chest is fine but you lack lower chest development you want to spend more of your time doing flat movements. Ready? Here are the two key "muscle building secrets" you need to follow... Step #1: Eat in a calorie surplus. Step #2: Get stronger. That's it. I of course use the term "muscle building secrets" jokingly because of how simple this advice is, but it continues to amaze me how many people trying to gain muscle still over-look them and then wonder why they aren't making any progress. The simple fact is this... If you aren't eating in a calorie surplus, you are NOT going to gain any significant muscle, and if you aren't getting stronger on all of your lifts in the gym over time, you are NOT going to gain any significant muscle. Period. These are far from some highly guarded set of "bodybuilding secrets", but they do form the underlying foundation of any successful program and should be given primary focus before you worry about anything else. Exercise selection, training splits, macro-nutrient breakdowns, food choices, meal timing, supplements... NONE of this means anything at all if you aren't following these basic guidelines first and foremost... #1 - To eat in a calorie surplus, you need to make sure you're taking in more calories than you burn. If you aren't gaining body weight consistently, then you are not in a surplus. To start, just multiply your body weight in pounds by 14-16 (go higher or lower depending on activity level) and then add 350 on top of this. Track your diet, see how your weight responds, and increase if necessary until you're gaining around half a pound per week or so. #2 - To get stronger, start tracking all of your workouts in terms of weight and reps, and then place 100% of your focus on "beating the logbook" each week. Don't "wing it" or "keep it in your head" - WRITE IT DOWN! You will progress far quicker this way, and gaining strength is by far the most important aspect of building muscle. You can either progress by performing more reps with a given weight, or by increasing the weight itself. So there you have it, the two key "muscle building secrets" you need to follow to make consistent gains. Even if you just follow these two things alone you'll already be guaranteed to make decent gains. And on the other hand, if you aren't following both of them, you're guaranteed to make little to no gains at all.

Well the good news is that building muscle after 50 is the same as with any age. These same principles apply: 1.overload the muscle 2.you need a rest phase 3.and you need to feed yourself appropriately to ensure an effective recovery Most older guys and girls, especially if they have been training for most of their life understand these principles. They know about breaking down muscle tissue and then refueling and resting so the muscle grows upon recovery. What tends to be missing in the older lifter is the adequate muscle overload. Even though you are doing the basic lifts just like you always did, you are not getting into muscle overload very often if all all. And here is why it happens. Very few of us, if any, have stayed super fit continuously throughout our lives. We've all had periods of downtime where we got a bit out of shape and then had to get started again. As you get older, these re-starts become harder and harder. You may have lost some muscle mass, gained a bit of weight and getting through the initial soreness phase of a new workout program is tough. As a result, even though you are lifting weights, you are typically doing the 10 to 15 rep lifts because this is what is comfortable when getting back into it. You feel a little pump with the weight low and the reps high but this is not optimum for a muscle building routine. The bottom line is that 10 to 15 rep sets really don't break down muscle. Don't get me wrong. It is still good exercise and you'll get good benefit from it. It burns energy, provides great mobility and range of motion movement and is good aerobically. You just won' build muscle and get much stronger. You need to get down into the 4 to 6 rep range to sufficiently break down muscle so it grows back bigger and stronger. Don't worry about the weight on the bar. Heavy is a relative term and different for each of us. Heavy to you is what you can lift 4 to 6 times with perfect form. That will build muscle. Now just a last bit of caution. If you have been hitting the high rep sets, don't immediately go to all out, low rep lifting. You are flirting with an injury, Gradually work yourself down in reps and up in weight until you are comfortable handling the heavier load. Now go start building muscle after 50.
