***SLR Magic 8mm F/4 Review - 2017***
***Shot with the Panasonic GH4+GH5, and Sony A6500***
TL:DR - if you want a really cool super wide angle lens for MFT then I would say get it, it's awesome, it's fun when you have a lot of light... but if you don't have a lot of light, and you want ultra clarity and sharpness, then this lens isn't gonna cut it for you.
Are you looking for the widest, fastest rectilinear lens for Micro Four Thirds to date? Currently, at the time of this upload, the SLR Magic 8mm F/4 holds that very title. After, using this for almost 3 weeks on various jobs and personal projects, I can safely say I have put my work in on this lens. It's corners can be unsatisfyingly blurry at F/4 and it seems unintentional, rather then getting some sort of shallow depth of field, although this IS a 16mm equivalent lens at f/8 so one shouldn't expect a shallow depth of field. That said it does have some chromatic aberration, but once around F/8 it seems to disappear, for the most part, just watch out for super-bright objects in your shot. It's tiny focus handle and profile make it difficult to quickly switch focus, and because this is a rectilinear lens and not a fisheye, you DO have to focus it if you want to get macro or really close up on your subject where the minimum focusing distance seems to be about 3-6". Would I recommend this lens for drone shooters and people who want to fly a gimbal or steadicam type rig? Yes, but don't expect the world from it. It WILL work, but again that F/4 aperture really hurts this lens' probability of being used, and thus relegates it to a 'specialty' lens class and not really one you'd want to keep on your camera all the time. But then again, SLR Magic have designed it just for that, gimbals and drones so it seems to fit right at home in that category. I thank SLR Magic for choosing me and allowing me to review this lens, and will say their customer support throughout this whole experience was great. The first lens I received had a defect in the middle of the the front element, a sort of 'blurry spot' where everything in the section of the lens was blurry beyond recognition. I told them about it, and they immediately shipped out another copy no questions asked with a return package for the defective lens. I highly recommend dealing with them as they are great and offer wonderful customer support. That being said, if you're looking to buy this lens, make sure you do it at an authorized retailer so that you can take advantage of any warranties. Thank you so much for watching!
