MREs Featured in September 2014 National Geographic Magazine

05:06
Last month a friend alerted me to the fact that military rations would be mentioned in an article in the September 2014 issue of National Geographic magazine. While disappointing that it was only a four-page spread at the end of a much longer article about food, it was still pretty interesting--and exciting to see rations featured in a magazine like National Geographic! Here's a look at just what's in the article. Obviously, I claim no ownership of anything from the magazine. All images and text are from--and property of--National Geographic magazine. I simply am sharing something that I found in an issue I bought at a newsstand.

The experience is being covered in dispatches, photos and video in National Geographic magazine's May issue for iPad, available now. http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/everest/on-the-ipad# The expedition is led by famed mountaineer and The North Face athlete Conrad Anker. Anker, along with Richards, a fellow The North Face athlete, seek to repeat the historic climb of the 1963 National Geographic-sponsored American Mount Everest Expedition. The two athletes will attempt to summit via Everest's seldom visited West Ridge, and their alpine-style climb will be documented by Richards for a print feature in National Geographic magazine early next year. In addition to the team of Anker and Richards, a second team composed of The North Face athletes, Montana State University geologist David Lageson, and National Geographic writer Mark Jenkins will attempt to summit from the more common Southeast Ridge route. The expedition is sponsored by National Geographic and The North Face, with support from Montana State University, which has created online science curriculum about the Himalayas for fifth graders. Joining the climbers at Base Camp will be a team of five Mayo Clinic researchers who will study the impacts of high altitude on human physiology. 22nd September 1888: First edition of National Geographic Magazine published

03:09
The National Geographic Society was established in Washington D.C. in January 1888. Founded by just thirty-three men, the Society’s first President was the lawyer and financier Gardiner Greene Hubbard whose lay interest in science and geography perfectly embodied the Society’s creation ‘for the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge’. Nine months after the Society’s foundation, the first edition of its journal was sent to its 165 charter members. Consisting mostly of short technical articles, the magazine struggled to increase its readership for the first few years of its existence. Following the election of Alexander Graham Bell as President and the appointment of the new editor Gilbert H. Grosvenor, the early 1900s saw the magazine begin to focus more on pictorial content. Although criticised by some members of the Board of Managers for being ‘unscientific’, the increasing use of often pioneering photographs soon helped to secure a much wider audience. Initially only available to members of the National Geographic Society, the magazine is now available to purchase on newsstands and through direct subscription around the world. The creation of nearly 40 different local-language editions has resulted in a global circulation of more than 6.5 million copies per month, reaching an estimated 60 million readers. Revenue from sales of the magazine help to fund scientific expeditions and scientific research as well as sponsor travelling exhibitions, making the National Geographic Society one of the largest non-profit scientific and educational organisations in the world.
